I see the last race at Newbury on Saturday has no runners. I think this is a great step forward. I hate the last race on the card. You've done your money on the previous 5 or 6 races and you get this idea that you'll suddenly win in the last race. Of course you won't. Get rid of the last race I say.
A lot of kerfuffle about this online (it even made the BBC Sports headlines page on their website ).Whilst it is a bit of a cheapskate trick by the racecourse (they could have diverted 5 grand from the Super Sprint Stakes kitty into the final race pot) the anger felt by trainers and owners should be channeled towards solving the real issue here - too much racing, prize money spread too thinly and the continued failure of racing's governing body to ensure a healthy proportion of the money wagered on racing is levied back into the sport. There are any number of examples of how to do it properly (France, Australia) yet the BHA seem to have the blinkers on.
At the current best price of 13/2 Emily Dickinson looks a sound wager in the Group-1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks (15:45) at the Curragh. Form is as good as anything in the race and therefore hopeful of a very good run from her. Seamie Heffernan on board for the Aidan O'Brien yard.

The kitty for the Super Sprint comes mostly from the owners of the runners buying their horses at the qualifying sale. How would it be fair to see some of that siphoned off to fund another race? Countries that operate a betting monopoly like France are heavily reliant on the traditional punter that places their wagers with no regard to how the system fleeces them. If I went into a British betting shop or on a British betting site and they were offering odds comparable to the French PMU then I would virtually never have a bet. In all the years that I went racing in France, I would rarely have more than one bet (if that) on a nine race card. I am not sure in Australia whether the tax rate is set at a national level or a state level but in Western Australia (a quick Google search for Australia betting) it is 15 per cent. All forms of gambling in Australia generate over Aus$6bn in tax revenue. Horse racing gets funding from a levy scheme similar to the UK but it varies by state: in Queensland it is 5 per cent, so bettors there face effectively 20 per cent deductions. There are six times as many racetracks in Australia as there are in the UK but they only have double the fixtures. In the UK, horse race betting has been in decline for years, which has resulted in the industry adding more and more fixtures to try and generate more turnover; but the people that run racing are just not very smart and this dog chasing its tail will eventually be exhausted.
It was inevitable that with the forecast for temperatures in the high thirties it would be unworkable for both man and beast. Fortunately somebody has taken the decision in advance to save everyone from a stupid situation where they turned up at the courses and a decision was then made to abandon. So on Monday and Tuesday, the only British meetings will be in the land that warm weather forgot: Scotland. Strange, however, that Sunday’s three British meetings are on, albeit with many small fields. Chelmsford, Southwell and Wolverhampton: so much for “all weather” (again) – too hot for kitty litter.

In the Irish Oaks, Magical Lagoon looks the banker of the day but is no sort of price. Cairde Go Deo and History are the other two that caught my eye and they're my picks to fill out the places. Combi fc/tc. I've also chucked a couple of quid at the Skybet offer of Magical Lagoon to win, History to finish second and winning distance to be 2+ lengths at 28/1.
Whilst I like the idea of the Newbury Super Sprint, it has become a bit of a non event for betting purposes. It is almost the reverse of a claiming race in that the weight is allotted according to the cost of your horse rather than how much you value it. This year, like most others, the race is dominated by a couple that have been shrewdly purchased and trained for the day. Half the field will take home prize money and the eighth will take home nearly as much as the winner of the opener. I expect today there could be quite a few non-runners as connections decide that it might be a little warm for their charges. It seems that Happy Romance is favoured in the Hackwood Stakes as she won it last year (beating Diligent Harry) and won the Super Sprint the previous year; however, she was a no show in the July Cup, was a never nearer seventh in the Platinum Jubilee and I am not convinced her second at Meydan should be taken at face value so she has not won since this race last year. Given that Diligent Harry was behind her at Ascot as well as this race last year, it is hard to make a case for him. Injury prone Minzaal was behind both of those at Ascot and has not fulfilled the promise of his juvenile form but his third in the Duke Of York puts him in with a chance at this level. Six year old Chil Chil makes her seasonal bow but she is certainly up to this level, having been third in the Haydock Sprint Cup when last seen (Happy Romance behind); and her trainer has produced them fit enough first time before. None of the three year olds look up to this, with Sam Maximus simply not good enough, Dubawi Legend may not have trained on and Go Bears Go winning only a four runner event this year, seemingly having regressed from his excellent Breeders’ Cup second last year. Rohaan won back-to-back Wokinghams but after last year’s win he was highly tried in Group 1s and well beaten every time. Before winning at the Royal meeting this time he was second last in the Group 2 Duke Of York, a line that favours third Minzaal. Run To Freedom was tenth in the Platinum Jubilee and would need to step up on his Listed race win prior to that. This leads me to what is the best horse in the race on ratings: MAN OF PROMISE. I do not understand why they ran him over five in the King’s Stand last time, where he finished behind Saint Lawrence, but he won two races at Meydan at the start of the year. He beat stablemate Lazuli in one and A Case Of You in the other; however, he was then beaten by A Case Of You (Happy Romance second) in a Group 1 (a more than six length form reversal), where Platinum Jubilee winner Naval Crown was fourth.

In the 14:56 Group-3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury, outsider Saint Lawrence could be a sporting e/w bet at the current best odds of 14/1. The Al Kazeem colt ran a fine race at Ascot 32-days ago when 6th of 16 to the great Australian sprinter Nature Strip. The step-up to 6f will suit selection and has a decent chance of a podium finish. Andrew Atzeni takes the ride for the Roger Varian yard. Best of luck today folks, enjoy the racing!
Too much great sport going on this weekend and I totally missed seeing HECTIC today. Tipped it on Monday but it was withdrawn. I really do believe that one of racings big problems is quantity. Far too much racing and that turns people off I feel.
