AM sticks out for me As it stands it's Son/Deki with Lucas/Bryan backing them up, plus Richarlison as either an AM or CF depending on how we're set up, and we could definitely do with somebody to split defences. Maddison's name has bubbled up to the surface after Paqueta became a punchline for his kiting injury, plus there's Oscar Gloukh (or Gluh) being linked - but he's more of a prospect signing Since I'm on the subject, prospect signings are something we should keep an eye on if there's a Gloukh or Zabarnyi or Alex Scott who can be brought in inexpensively and allowed to develop, but preferably no repeat of last summer where Bryan got a bunch of pressure dumped on his shoulders on arrival yet never played while Sarr was allowed to develop for another season at Metz at the exact moment they became a flaming trainwreck
I'm happy with our CBs, I think our main three are all very good defensively, with Romero also being good from a technical aspect. Whereas Lenglet seems to be better technically than Dier/ Davies but not as good defensively as either. So it's a nice mix as depending on opposition we can change it up to suit our needs. We kept 16 clean sheets last season, only Ederson and Alisson kept more with 20 and Conte joined part way through too. So another new CB on top of Lenglet isn't really a necessity in my opinion but more a bonus. Someone who can maybe really push Dier so that Lenglet purely competes with Davies would be nice but it's not something I'll lose much sleep over if we don't.
We'll probably need a depth CB given Tanganga racking up teams to be linked with (currently standing at Milan, Valencia, Brentford and Everton) while Fulham have made an approach for Joe Rodon Zabarnyi's the easy player to mention as Alasdair Gold said we're keeping tabs on him, while Sayers and ***an-Walcott have the opportunity to get themselves noticed on tour (although I very much doubt they'll be featuring when the season starts, barring another FA Cup draw with a non-league team)
Hard to see any glaring weakness in our XI to be honest, I think our fully fit first choice team can give anyone a game but I think we can improve on some squad players to help increase competition and allow for even better rotation. Richarlison has added good quality in attack and we have four very good CMs battling for two spots but outside of these spots, I'd say there's improvements to be made in depth. Any of Sanchez, Rodon (on the basis he isn't favoured), Doherty/ Emerson, Sessegnon and Lucas are players I think we could do better on.
We didn’t have the pressure of CL last season This requires quality in depth imo not necessarily squad buffers. Only way we improve our squad is to always strengthen the first team. I just believe as a collective squad we are still a few top notch signings away from dealing with the fixture issue next season…if we want to win one of them.
We need someone feeding Kane and Son just like Kane does , leaving those two upfront would bring all kinds of trouble for those team that have sat back against us in the past, someone to unlock those stubborn defences
Disagree there. Dier isn’t bad but he’s got mistakes in him and there is definitely better out there. Pau Torres would be my choice. Him, Lenglet and Romero is a good set of cb.
You do have a reference point. In 2015-16 Spurs finished on 70 pts, in a season where they reached EL QFs. The next season, Spurs finished with an extra 16 pts (effectively 5 wins) ,in a season with a poor CL group stage. The nominal squad changes of note was the arrival of Wanyama, and Alli effectively increasing his goal tally by 10. How do you rate the squads of then (strongest starting XIs, breadth/depth) with the one currently assembled ??
I'm not saying that there aren't better out there, just that we'd struggle to sign them. Is Torres an improvement? I'm not convinced of that, but he also doesn't want to join. He's supposedly Juve bound to replace De Ligt, who's going to Bayern or possibly Chelsea.
id say we are better now if everyone plays to their potential week in week out then yes we can achieve what we set out to achieve. Rarely works like that and increasing squad strength is one way of minimising the risk imo if you consider what solid competition can do to a starting XI by bringing out the best of it
And as I remember, he said he hates Spurs and that Wilshere was 10x better than that monkey (Bale). So not only a c**t but a blind and stupid one too.
Sours can pay big wages, have Conte, CL football and state of the art stadium and training facilities. This is the time to go for it and aim high. The signings so far are good but I still want that one elite level signing to really give a boost before the new season.
Do you believe at the minimum the squad now assembled should repeat the 2016-17 season ?? If not, what specifically do you think is missing to that end ??
