An interesting thought, have people on here always been following saints or did they start with different teams. As someone who isn't very local to southampton, i initially supported liverpool (as my dad followed them) and it wasn't until my dad suggested we go to see a football team play that i started following saints. We first started watching saints when i was about 8 or 9 in the 2002/2003 season, and after that cup final i remained a supporter ever since, renewing our season ticket for 10 years now sorry bad maths this is the 9th year we've renewed our season ticket
Since getting into football (at the age of 9), yes. Only ever Saints (although I have subsequently developed soft spots for other teams, most notably Liverpool). Got taken to my very first football match in August 1998, vs Fulham at The Dell, having just watched France '98 on the TV and instantly getting hooked to the sport (having never watched a game of football before in my life - I basically owe my whole football life to that World Cup!).
Started watching football when I was around 4 or 5 and initially supported Man Utd (because they won everything) but had a soft spot for Saints because my Dad grew up in Southampton and supports them. Eventually I wised up and realised which club meant more to me, and that supporting a club just because they win all the time is totally lame.
For some reason i supported Leicester City when i was a nipper, even though i'm born and bred in Southampton. Apprently i went mental whenever they were mentioned on the box and clapped for about an hour! Then when i was 8 my old man took me to The good ol' Dell to see Arsenal & Brighton (last ever games) and i've been hooked ever since
Yep always been Southampton, even in my very youngest days when I knew nothing at all about football I would tell people I supported Southampton. I'd love to know why - I've always lived roughly between Southampton and Portsmouth, nobody in my immediate family is a football fan (Dad casually followed Spurs growing up, but doesn't give two ****s about football), grandfather is a Southampton fan but was never close enough to him for influence. First game was sat in the away end at Fratton Park (2-1 win to the mighty Tranmere!), was too young to ever have any hardcore football supporting friends convince me to be a fan (besides, my two best friends when I were young were a Newcastle fan and a Crystal Palace fan)... but I have memories of me in my back garden playing football with my Dad pretending to be Southampton, and trying to convince my Newcastle supporting friend to switch his allegiance. So despite not knowing how I grew to love them, it's always been the case!
was born & raised just north of London ,but Dad was a saints man through and through i went to my first game at the Dell when about 5 used to smile because they called me nipper never heard that before (still Makes Me Smile) been a fan ever since through so much grief at school where everyone else supported Spurs or Arsenal,,My 4 kids all desserted me and support liverpool (glory hunters )but do have saints as there second team,,but proud to have been a saints fan for 50 years now through thick and thin
I used to like Chelsea because of Hasselbaink probably because of the amazing goals he used to score then Saints beat them 4-2 and I just started supporting them for some reason don't know why...good choice though.
I've always been a Saints fan, but have got no connection with the city. I didn't know anything about football until I was 7, as it wasn't very high profile in the part of Ireland that i lived in prior to that. The Dell was the first ground I went to and that was that for me, despite living near Bristol I was hooked on Saints. I think most people have other teams they keep an eye out for at results time, but the majority pick a team or inherit a loyalty and tend to stick with it......football fans, anyway.
Born in Portmore Jamaica, so supported Portmore United Fc until i was 6 then i moved here. Now i support the mighty Saints
Been going to watch Saints for about 24 years now. Was taken to my first game at the Dell in 1987 and became hooked on football and an avid Saints fan. I do not have a 'second' team (a rather lame concept), I am true to one team and one team only.
Agree with much of the above, Guly is a bit like marmite but to give him his due this season he has appeared to work his socks off and do the tracking back to tackle that many overseas players don't like I think he is much better at the head of the diamond formation/playing off Rickie - this gives him the freedom to drift into space or pick up the ball from deep and run at the central defenders Half the time I dont think he knows what he is going to do which must mean a nightmare for the defenders trying to cover his moves
I was born ten minutes walk from the Dell and my dad took me when I was a boy, and I sat on his shoulders to watch the likes of Charlie Wayman. I remember the saints fans yelling 'up the middle for Charlie' That started the love affair and I have been a fan ever since. I was a season ticket holder at the Dell until I retired to Spain (hence the name). I have now returned and am loving having a season ticket at St Mary's and watching this amazing football that Sir Nigel is encouraging the team to play.
I started getting into football in the late 80's when I was about 8. It seemed like Spurs and Man Utd were the only English teams on TV (we lived in Germany then) and I couldn't stand the fact that everybody else was a Man U fan so started supporting Spurs. This was in the days of Gary Lineker and Gazza, so were quite exciting. My Dad's been a Saints fan all his life so I always liked to see them win, but when Dad said he wanted a season ticket, I was happy to come too as I just love football, and eventually going every week, you get to become part of the Saints family. Still like to see Spurs do well, despite Twitchy!!
didn't get into football untill 3 years ago when i was 22 (Bit of a late bloomer i know). Fathers from Southampton and supports them on and off so it was just natural.
