Excellent article in the Times today on Gilbert Jessop, the man who still holds the record for fastest Test century, set 120 years ago v Australia,…..in the days when you had to hit the ball out of the ground (really) to get a six. The Times story is fire walled, but the story is here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_Jessop His averages weren’t great, but occasionally he just went nuts.
ODI between Netherlands and England.... England put into bat.... very reasonable of Roy to get out on 2nd over as it has allowed Salt, Malan and Buttler to all smash centuries.... currently 391/2 from 43 overs..... could be looking at a 500 score unless they declare
Malan out now. That'll be a relief for the Dutch. Oh wait, Livingstone's in next..... Correction, it's Morgan.
Good morning's work by England....... lose toss and then reduce NZ to 65/3 as we approach lunch......
A huge bit of luck for Leach getting Nicholls caught off the non-striker's bat, but he's bowled pretty well on a day one pitch. Should have reviewed Mitchell's LBW shout off Potts, but England in charge at the moment.
The same 2 batsmen are getting them out of trouble yet again. Absolutely ludicrous decision not to review lbw against Mitchell when on 9, was hitting middle and leg. Root dropped him last match on 3 and he went on and got 190, how many will it cost us this time ? Stokes has captained well on the whole, but added to that decision why bowl 3 overs of Root to Blundell when he first came in ? Very strange
Stokes would have had no idea about the Mitchell LBW because he was fielding at mid-wicket. He relied on Foakes.
There was quite a lot going on in real time. He might have got outside the line, he might have hit it and it might have gone on to miss leg stump. On replay, it was all blindingly obvious, but you could see how the ump might give the batsman the benefit. We probably should have reviewed just based on who it was, though.
I think he thought he got an inside edge, but Erasmus ( usually an excellent umpire ) had one of the poorest days I've seen him have. On a weird day not long after that the technology went down and we were unable to review any decisions while it was. There was another one where an lbw shout would've been close but we couldn't review it, and then later on when it became available again we reviewed one the ball after it came back on lol. Turned out to be a shocking review. The simple fact that Mitchell has been like Smith was for Australia against us for ages, meant we should've reviewed it. Foakes was definitely at fault for talking Stokes into not reviewing it, only he will know what he thought was the reason. Its already a costly decision in this test.
Haven't been watching as we're moving house this week, but the series is already won, so a learning curve in this test isn't the end of the world.
He's got a nice semi on Carrow Road - seeing Delia first thing in the morning can do that to a good man
