One eyed detective who looks like the type that bothers kids outside school and flashes people by opening his trench coat

Personally I quite liked it and how they got some actual half stars in to do a cameo as a villian and its a battle of wits as a thing.

the list of peopel is hilarious

I like how that got the same person in multiple times
Like Patrick McGoohan (saw him in it as Villain at least three times)
How someone as observant as Columbo never noticed was brilliant lol

Midsommer Murders keeps recycling actors too. Must be something about detective shows

    "There's something that bothers me"

    "One more question"

    "My wife..."

Its a classic "ah I've beaten you you trench coat kiddiefiddler" look on everyone's face and then he turns round and says "Just one more thing"

BAM, case closed, no answer and they are as gobsmacked as if he flashed them like rolf harris.

All these detectives have a classic spin like this. its almost comforting viewing for the 80s viewer that the same thing happens every time.

Murder she wrote: someone say something innocuous and the old biddy solves it then entraps the murderer in a game of dice with death only to be saved by whatever detectives she's met this week.

Law and order was truly radical at the time i suppose as people got away with it in court sometimes. but the same format 100%. cops go beat the answer out of someone, the laywers come in and throw evidence out and jack mccoy gets on a high horse etc.

A-Team.. team gets capture and locked in a place with lots of tools. team builds something. dynamite is found and used. cars/jeeps flip over and nobody is hurt. a team gets away. rinse and repeat.

what other detective shows has this sort of flow?

    MacGyver
Death in Paradise very similar to Murder she wrote whereby it’s usually something Innocuous that triggers the reveal lol

    ah yes.

all things can and will be solved with science and not guns.

truly bizarre thought for most americans.

I can remember when he made a thermal lance and cut open a security van some dude was trapped inside by just cutting some poor ****s bike frame and making thermite out of iron and aluminium filings.

then roll credits. it was that bad the Simpsons made a running joke about it.

I'd like to see a reverse detective show... Whereas instead of the same detective catching the killer each week... It's the killer outwitting a different detective each week. <laugh>

    Hustle not far from that
Well it is as it’s not really about killers at all
But they do outwit people every week including the police:)
And the old guy in it was in Columbo lmao

surely if hes a person of interest all the time the various agencies would just start to gang up on this serial killer/ master burgler/ whatever?

like... we used to joke that the old bint on murder she wrote had to have been a prime suspect for one of the people knocked off given death followed her around constantly. Surely she was the common denominator in 100s of killings.

Oh who's she topped this time and pinned it on some poor fool... again...

Yes, and back to my wife's favourite: midsommer Murders. The first detective they had... His wife was ALWAYS involved with the murder victim, or association with the same group the victim hung with.

If she was riding a bike one week, you knew the murder victim has something to do with biking. If she was studying local history, a historian would die. If she was reading a book, that author would be killed.

It was just too much of a coincidence that she was somehow associated with every murder... Poor old Detective Barnaby never figured it out that his wife was a mass murderer.
