I just don’t think McCarthy is as bad as you seem to

I agree tbh, would like to have seen a more established number 1 come in. But who knows - maybe we have gone for cheaper option here with a view to spending money elsewhere. That would make it a worthwhile gamble imo

    Edited that for you.

In all seriousness though I hope you’re right. Last season needs to be a wake up call and some money needs to be spent.

Personally I’m hoping for a big striker signing, feels like a long time since we’ve signed a truly exciting striker.

We seem to have become a bit cynical about our transfer business but we have entered a new era and I am prepared to be patient and optimistic until events prove otherwise.

I don’t believe it’s not welcome, but this is a signing where the positives far out weigh the negatives. He sounds like a very exciting talent and to be a full international at 20 is football prodigy status. We could of paid a little more for a Henderson or Johnstone with some PL minutes, but I believe it’s far more exciting to have a players whose career trajectory could be world class.

yes your points are valid as a concern, but I don’t believe the alternatives available are guaranteed to be better either.

It doesn't even need to be a negative opinion - your view could be considered to be neutral at best and still you will get hostile responses; often attributing opinions or comments you have never made.

I really disagree with this (ironically). You can have whatever opinion you like, but people are allowed to disagree with it too. In this case, people are pointing out that McCarthy is an adequate number two. I get what SF4L is saying, but in reality every transfer (and particularly those in the price range we deal with) is risky. This one doesn’t strike me as especially risky, which I’m entitled to point out, just as SF4L is entitled to disagree with.

As I said previously every player signed can be risky. Anyone remember Ravanelli and Juninho at Middlesbrough? They spent big and still got relegated if I remember correctly.

Juninho is still the only person to get relegated and be premier League player of the season.

He was pretty solid last season apart from Norwich away and was not actually dropped but was injured and Fraser's good form meant that he played until the end of the season.
People tend to forget that he is also an International player.

I know the Irish have reputation for being positive about their kin, but these Villa fans really think he has a bright future

Who is an international player - McCarthy? Jeez, that is stretching it somewhat. He was one, and even that was was a fleeting appearance.

I think he is ok as No2 for us, but should only ever start games as back-up if players injured, maybe the Carabo cup.

Once your selected by you're country you are an International player and can't be that bad is my view.
He has had poor games in previous seasons but last season I can only remember the one at Norwich. Most of our defensive problems were in central defence in my opinion and not so much the goalies.

I was going to post yesterday about how Dan Sheldon was arguing on TSP that there weren’t three English goalkeepers playing better than him (max 2) prior to that Norwich game. And he is not exactly a super enthusiastic saints cheerleader

The others didn’t really agree but it was interesting

Ok, we see it differently. He played a part of a game I think, and is no where near international standard. Maybe that spoke volumes of the GK standards in the country at that time.

Like I said, her will be ok as a back up, but shouldnt be anywhere near the first team except for emergencies.

And yes, I do agree about the defence, bringing in Lyanco was a mistake imo, i get funds or lack of etc, but im sure we could have got better for the money. And if we hadn’t spunked c. £75k pw on Theo, we’d have had more money for better at CB.

That said, whilst AM only had a few howlers, his distribution was known to be one of the worst in the league. In fact I seem to recall both him and FF were both near the bottom!

I personally don't think Alex is as bad as made out but I understand those frustrated at the prospect of him being no1 again should Bazunu not work out. With him and Forster out of contract last Summer it really shouldn't have come to that situation but obviously not as simple as that especially given the time of his new contract.

I'm happy with this as although it's a bit of a gamble the potential returns and huge and consequences not that bad (again I don't think AM that bad really).

I also didn't see GK as the huge issue that others did. It was a problem position for sure but only one of many and nowhere near the biggest imo and therefore I'm pretty happy with gambling on the position. Whereas a big gamble on a striker say I'd be less happy about as that's the position we can't afford to get wrong.

The other issue that has been overlooked by many (in my opinion) is that had we let both go and signed Bazunu we would have struggled to sign someone as good as Alex to be number 2. To sign on knowingly as a number 2.

I don’t suppose City fans were overjoyed about the prospect of a season long injury putting Steffen in goal last season. Most extreme example. But they still don’t seem to be signing a new number two because there are only so many good goalkeepers that will sign as a number two. The way it usually works is a new number 1 is signed and bumps the other down. Chelsea for example.

Spurs have signed on someone who was considered pretty much the same as McCarthy until very recently. And even then he had some howlers

Who I’m not sure on is arsenal . Have they signed a Leno replacement already?
