I know but we were 3 down Pete, he could have played 3 at the back. One of southgates systems is 3 at the back

It would appear that the golden generation isn't all that golden after all. Still other countries are not exactly pulling up any trees either. Still think England will do OK in world cup, unless they get sucked in by the tabloid press who will, no doubt, write off USA and Iran before a ball is kicked. Wales will be a tough game. Eke out wins vs Iran and US should be enough to get out of the group. Then its about having the quality and a bit of luck. Semis at best. Q/Fs at worst.

All we ever do is experiment, Southgate should by now have a clear system(s) and team.

England's dismal Nations League campaign continued as they slumped to their worst home defeat since 1928 against a ruthless Hungary to leave Gareth Southgate's side rooted to the bottom of Group A3.

There's a World Cup in 5 months. 5 months is too late to be 'experimenting'. Pick what you think is your best team and stick with it. Our two in midfield don't want the ball. Phillips demonstrably avoided it. They're always facing our goal, when the back three/four try to link them in, it invariably got sent back in the direction it came from. A massive rethink is needed.

Have a look at Man City & Liverpool. Their midfielders demand the ball and then look for openings. Englands central midfielders don't want the ball and almost invariably give it strait back to where it came from.

It's not all bad, the Faroes drew 2-2 with Luxembourg who are ranked 30 places above us. That's progress, man.

He was playing three at the back before Stones was sent off
Didn't you see James hanging about in front of Walker?

His reasoning was probably to ensure that we didn't go four down and suffer our worst home defeat for several generations.

    Oh wait...

Southgate I think is too negative and is not brave enough to seize the moment. Two holding midfielders ( better when Rice plays) stifles our creativity and we do have talented players. Re euro final. 3 Wiley but ageing defenders ( see Sako been nearly chocked) and played for penalties. Young tricky players with pace left til the last moments to come on to take a penalty. If he trusted them to take a pen then he should of let them go earlier to run at Italy. The technical ability of those pens was very questionable which makes me wonder why the coaching team didn’t raise an eyebrow at the time during training. These things make the difference between first and second. Oh well he has 2 games before the World Cup to get confidence back as it must be shot.

Southgate's only achievement as a manager, prior to getting the England job, was turning UEFA Cup finalists Middlesbrough into a mediocre Championship side in the space of three years. We're not talking about an Italy situation, where a manager who WON the Euros and who has a history of success as both a player and a manager is trying to arrest the slide. We're talking about an absolutely dogshit manager, and one for whom the football is secondary to 'other things'.

I'm surprised so many people seemed to have watched it. I've lost a lot of interest in the national side over the years, and the game last night seemed even more pointless than a friendly.

I reckon the next world cup will have the least interest or excitement of any world cup for years, and certainly the lowest interest since widespread coverage.

The men in suits and overpaid prima donnas have sucked the passion out of the game.

I watched it, partly because I thought it would be a good game with England having something to play for (beyond pride etc), being the need to avoid relegation from their Nations League group. This talk about players not being interested, nothing to play for, long season, etc etc is rubbish imo .... as if those things somehow only applied to our players anyway. Southgate just isn't up to it and he's sucking the life out of this talented crop of players we have.

To be fair this is how I felt after the farce of 2016 , didn’t watch England for a while after , sick of all the stories of the players and their cliques and not sitting together like kids . The last couple of tournaments reignited my interest in the national side , seemed to be watching players that actually wanted and enjoyed playing for the country . And I think Southgate has to take credit for a lot of that , maybe it’s a case of he’s taken it as far as he can and to go that extra mile and win something we need the next level , but some fans are talking like we have a history of winning things , you can’t ignore a semi final and a final when you compare it to the majority of last 50/60 years , you just can’t / regardless of opponents etc . I just don’t get the level of abuse been thrown at him , I would wager no other manager will get to a semi then a final consecutively in next 50 years, hope to be wrong obviously, and that’s not saying because he’s an amazing manager , he probably has got a bit lucky at times , but other managers have had luck and good squads and got nowhere near , so I say fair play to him

I've been saying for a long time that the pursuit of money by the idiots in charge of football will have the opposite effect because more and more people are deciding that most matches are too boring to bother watching

Did you feel more connect when there was a Liverpool table and a Man United table , and the likes of Beckham and Gerrard decided who could talk to who? (Now widely acknowledged by them all ) Serious question as I strangely feel more of a connect to this group , doesn’t seem to be the Ego’s that there used to be . Funny how people feel differently about it

You dont have a connection with the team based on who sits with who.
You have a connection based on who has the passion.
The passion comes from having faith in the manager and that isnt judged by what is said in interviews
A good manager doesnt need to constantly swap and change players to "have a look at them"
The manager watches several Premier League matches each week. He watches them in training. If he can't judge players without seeing them play in a badly chosen eleven - right back playing at left back for example - he'll never be able to judge them.
