Mick Channon left and came back and that worked out fine and he's still a Saints legend. Danny's still in his peak years and he is a great finisher and would no doubt improve us but £15m to £20m tops
It would be highly amusing if we bought him back a year after we sold him with only 12 months left on his contract for half the price.
I’m so numb from the end of the season, I still find it hard to envisage us being decent next year. We will have to get it so right, decent loans and canny purchases. I guess we have slightly more cash. I’ll be honest, think I’d take Danny back, seems unlikely though.
Easily the best player to pull on our shirt since Rickie left. I'd take him back in a flash if it made financial sense for all concerned.
As much as it would be a bitter pill for us to swallow, It would be an even bigger one for him.. I doubt his pride allow himself to comeback.. Id be up for it, Aslong as he worked hard. Him and a Leader at CB would be cracking business... Get Ben Mee in perhaps.
I wouldn’t have Ings back. He played very well for us but we have very rose-tinted glasses when it comes to him. He had one great year where he stayed fit, one mediocre one where he didn’t and it’s not like he’s been healthier since moving to Villa. It’s would have to be a cheap deal with low wages and a ton of bonuses related to games and goals. Think he’d have other clubs able to offer more money for lower expectations. Newcastle would actually be great for him. He’d be a good squad addition there and not inflate their spend much.
He wasn't injured much last season much really. It's just Gerrard had him on the bench a lot of the time. He was good for us even in the season after his great one where injuries took their toll. I'd take him back for sure. Don't think it will happen though.
Where’s the thread on our best acquisition to date? Edit: Don’t all shout at once. Found it on Saints Stuff. Surprised it’s not on here.
For me he goes to either Brighton( who are really decent but lack a natural goal scorer or Bournemouth whom he has great respect for and he knows he’s going to be the main man there again.
It’s an interesting one. We don’t know what went on behind the scenes when he went to Villa. Even if he played 40% of games less than fully fit he has an instinct for getting into positions and he CAN score goals. Think it’d be a good gamble at the right price.
Thing about Ings is he is probably free. The £30 million we got will be installments so if we forego them we have him on a free.
Except the instalment for other inward signings are likely offset against the presumed receipts of those instalments.
Agreed, but he was sold under Gao so it will be on the balance sheet, but maybe not entirely in the owners plans.
Not that I want to come across as negative, you guys know that’s the last thing I would want. But this talk of Ings returning feels a bit, erm, negative! He was great for us but I would have expected us to have a young understudy coming in by next season as he’s past his peak. Going from talking about Broja, a young exciting striker who has a high potential to Ings feels like a step down.
We were likely only talking about Broja because he was on loan with us, I don’t think we ever really stood much of a chance of making it a perm deal. I don’t think Ings will come back though, more likely to be another loan from somewhere and a perm signing from abroad would be my guess
