I disagree with a lot of his team selections but he is clearly not clueless. 2nd most successful English manager of all time, managed to reunite a group of individuals and quash inter-squad club rivalries. He has done an incredible job despite the strange player selections at times.
Nope, Bellingham which is fine. Bellingham is class. But Phillips has had an injury plagued season, JWP clearly should have started ahead of him IMO.
Phillips is almost certainly going to be in the WC squad though isn’t he? Southgate probably thought playing a strong team against whoever they’re playing tonight was the way forward
Only one more international break after this one before the WC. Makes sense to look at one of our better players last summer who has had injury issues.
Just seen they’re playing Germany aswell so definitely makes sense to play someone who will probably be first choice for WC against decent opposition. If JWP makes the squad it will be down to injuries you’d think, or he would have to have a really good first half of the season and probably not for us
Yeah an injury and I think he'll get in especially if he starts the season well. Don't think playing for us matters or has ever been an issue under Gareth tbh. An injury not unlikely though given games will be played right up until a week before the tournament. Really interested to see how those final weeks before play out with some not at 100% and some teams losing huge players right at the last minute.
