Just for a bit of context and something that really surprised me - when Trent did an interview before the last WC (I think) , the interviewer asked him what he wanted most, England to win the WC or Liverpool to win the league and he said that he couldn't choose because they both meant a lot to him. I remember posting on here at the time because I thought he would say there was no contest, it would be Liverpool but he didn't say that, he was genuinely stumped. It's why I know how gutted he was when Southgate didn't pick him a while back because playing for his country means so much to him. So him not singing the anthem means absolutely nothing in terms of his commitment to the national team.

Unlike usual, the Premier League is set to kick off on the weekend of August 5/6/7 this season, due to the World Cup taking place mid-season.
It is likely that at least one fixture will be held on the evening of Friday, August 5, to satisfy broadcasters.

Pretty sure England have much more pressing concerns than who does/doesn't sing the national anthem...they'll be lucky to hear it more than 3 times at the WC anyway at this rate

That team will not play at the WC, we will be much better in that tournament but for now players are being given a chance.

In the highly unlikely.event I get called up for England squad... I wouldn't sing it. Change the national anthem to Rule Britannia, or I'm too Sexy for my shirt... something not about the bloody queen... Maybe, but I wouldn't sing the national anthem. (And maybe that's the reason I've never been called up... England managers know that).

What has the queen ever done to you?
That said, rugby tends to have some good anthems.

She stuck her finger up my bum once...

... Besides that though, I'm completely opposed to the royalty in general. It doesn't help that she used tax payer money to try and cover up he sweaty son's *****philia. (Which was a fine paid out of tax payer money) or that members of the royal family allegedly shooed off an in law because she was part black.... (So they're not just ****s... They're racist ****s) Or that Elizabeth pushed Charles and Diana to marry for image and ****ed up both their lives and her grandkids lives in the aftermath. Or any of the other myriad scandals that tax payer money goes to cover up so they can continue getting public funds so they don't have to work.

Beyond all that though. Royalty is a relic from a bygone era. A parasitic process, a bunch of inbred snobs who only earn their right to rule because their ancestors were better at being murderers than some other people's ancestors.

We should abandon the monarchy and establish a Presidential Republic - what could possibly go wrong? They work so well elsewhere, like.

I'm probably a rarity amongst Scousers, in that I don't hate the monarchy. Nor do I support them, they're just there as far as I'm concerned. They're largely irrelevant in political terms, and they don't bother me.
What does bother me is the standard of politician we have. They are the ones that have a genuine impact on our lives on a daily basis, and represent our interests abroad, yet most of those at the top level are thoroughly incompetent and motivated solely by self-interest.
This offends me far more than the continued existence of an outmoded figurehead.
I'd accept the Queen ahead of Boris any day.

The difference though is, a twat like Trump comes along and he's gone in four years. QE2 comes along and it's decades. Remember who is next too... Charles. We've had good luck with King Charleses in the past. :bandit:. To my knowledge, none of the previous Charles ever said Britain's troops should be used as mercenaries during peace time either.

Good job they have very little to no form or function (the royals that is) but with them being so irrelevant the question is:. Why have them at all?

they represent everything that is wrong about the world. Real wealth, land, titles and all that comes with it, gifted to them and handed down through the generations while everyone else had to fight to crawl out of the gutter. Not just ours; all self imposed leaders…..Putin and his oligarchs are no different. Control the weak and the poor by keeping them down and allowing a little hope to stop them revolting. I’m not a socialist either btw, there’s not a politician worth my vote these days, they all disgust me. We’re all ****ed.

We have far bigger problems than a monarchy.

4 years is plenty of time to cause mayhem. It's not the nature of individual presidents that are the issue with that type of republic - it's the power wielded by each incumbent. The monarch has very little in comparison. The president of any country that has one is far, far more dangerous than any modern monarch.
Once upon a time monarchies dictated world events and screwed it up by themselves, these days they do little more than watch and mumble. Who are the big bad players on the world stage? It ain't Norway, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, etc. The only reason the UK has any influence at all is because we act like one of America's attack dogs.
The presidential system might seem attractive in theory, but in practice it's miserable.
US, Russia, Brazil etc, nothing to aspire to there.
In truth, it's human nature that's the issue here, whatever the system of power it allows its own exploitation for personal agenda. The people who seek power are, by their very nature, the last people who should be entrusted with it.
President, Prime Minister, oligarch, plutocrat - they're all the real power behind any throne. Imo we should be directing our energies at them, not at an archaic establishment with nominal influence.

    Nominal is even an exaggeration.

In truth she is a 96 year old trapped in an endless palatial prison being made do **** that does matter to anyone.

They forced her out of her house (castle) to London to walk/shambles out on a balcony and wave and she was nearly dead after.

Then they make her stay up late and stagger out to press some button and hasn't been seen since.

It is a guilded cage :)

The fact that William Windsor takes it so personal his illegitimate brother jumped ship to earm Netflix money only proves how brainwashed they are.

They own lands. That's it. Strip the rest away now and they'll still be rich landed gentry.

We are actively breeding more malign oligarchs today.

Must and Zuckerberg are far more malignant forces than this lot.
