Alfa Romeo looking pretty glorious in the Barcelona sun ☀️

 

Super intrigued at just how good this car might be this weekend- I think it might also be a “guide” for Ferrari upgrades (sidepods)

 

Looks like they have a rusty front wing element support!!! Seems weird.

Is that floor edge real?!

very intetesting looking car.

the basically square rear is not done by anyone else. it doesn't taper down at all to the rear.

the foor edge is different for sure

front wing even.

the front of the floor as intake vanes is also very different

Yes- the way I see it is that they’ve maintained the 2022 sidepod profile (the first part), almost as a “mini pod” like McLaren, but it then tapers into the Red Bull model.

So it’s got that mini “babybel” look but with the Red Bull airflow to the back of the car. Perhaps this is the way to get that great downforce but also reduce drag?

I wonder if these Ferrari teams will see some big success of “moulding” the two different approaches- I wonder if anyone will follow?

 

i suspect a large amount of convergence in design this season initially as teams seek to find the least drag, most stable airflows to make the underfloor work without porpoising.

there have been 4 approaches

1. Renault/williams half pod type designs seeking drop down really quickly
2. Merc - nano pods. seeking minimum drag but didn't work as intended at all due to rest of car.
3. Red bull. sweeping airflows
4. ferrari/McLaren. big and wide and using air to drive up or out.

not many teams replicated the red bull intake itself but the outwash under pod flow and the flow of air over the top and down under the wing seems to me to be the convergance point that a lot of teams are heading towards.

However all this being said it is still just one aspect of the cars, the stability on bumpy tracks, ride height and engine power are all unknowns that teams have to catch up on as well.

 

Saw on twitter a short video of Alfa taking the 2023 car out for a run in Barcelona. I thought that they couldn`t run cars until official test in Barhrain?
