**** it, let's have a bit of a nicer thing to talk about. Today was seemingly Shane's last game as a Southampton player after 8 seasons with the club. Signed for what seemed an excessive £15m at the time, no one could surely imagine that he'd be here so long and become such a cult hero. For a striker who doesn't really score goals he's got loads of memorable moments here and scored some really important goals. Fantastic professional too who never moaned about lack of opportunity and who always gave his all. Can't help but think if the whole squad had his attitude then we'd have got another 5/6 points this season. Sad to see him go but let's show the man some love
Thank god his contract is finally over. Seems like a lovely bloke but he’s been an absolute waste of money for years. (Sorry.)
Yes Shane Long is not a consistent goalscorer, but when he does play, he gives a s**t about the team, giving 100% everytime,
And after all, there have only been about 375 no7’s better than Shane in all my time as a Saints fan. Although as a top bloke, and for his Anfield goal, I will love him forever.
I've said it before, but my favourite aspect of Shane Long's game is how he consistently outjumps tall defenders despite only being about 4 feet tall. That was always fun to watch.
I always thought he was quite tall? 5’11 I just looked it up, a giant compared to the pair of midgets (Adams 5’9 and Armstrong 5’8) he plays with
As for Long, definitely wasn’t worth the fee at the time or with hindsight. He wasn’t worth the wages he received during that time, and scoring a goal that didn’t make any difference on whether we qualified or not for a final doesn’t change that for me. He does seem like a good bloke and can’t really blame him that Saints offered him multiple contracts despite only having one good year with us, so good luck to him
His goal against Villa (back when we were good) alone makes him a legend, sadly overshadowed by Mane's incredible hat trick
Love his attitude, he always left it out on the pitch and had his moments as a Saints player. I wish him well wherever he goes. Shame about that Saints song though...
My second favourite Long goal. And one of my favourite full stop. A real shame that it had to coincidence with what Mane amazingly achieved.
Hard to argue with this. I couldn't believe the money we spent on him at the time or the contract extensions he's been given since. I have to admit to a slightly illogical fondness for the guy and you can't accuse him of not trying but this is a striker who averaged under 5 goals a season. As an Irish fan I know once said, "Shane Long is 90% of a world class striker. Problem is, he couldn't finish his dinner."
