Re the penalty...I'm just amazed we got one...only our 4th all season!

The reason it was given imo was it was so obvious cos he pushed/barged him before the ball was anyone near him. No way of saying it was just a coming together.
Personally would be pissed if a spurs player did that.
Just heard Walcott say he thought it was a penalty which is pretty telling.

Saka diving in the first two minutes probably cost him with the free kick decision (which is wrong) but tbh we scored from the corner not the free kick and the corner was poorly defended.

Can not believe you didn't immediately sub on another defender...bizarre decision

Tierney is a poor ref imo but doesn't stand out cos the general stand of referees is awful...hence the bollocks from VAR referees.

Re Holdings first yellow...Davies was booked 10 minutes earlier for a similar pull back which was his first foul. By time Holding was booked for his pull back it was his third foul and at least one of them was bookable.

Like I said, no Royal, no Doherty (has gone from being really poor to an important cog for us), no Reguilón and no skipp but winning a NLD suggests we should be confident of a decent season next year.

You shouldn't be that surprised. You get penalties almost every game against us! <laugh>

As I said. If referees want to start giving penalties for things like that, then fine, but be consistent. I've never seen a penalty given for an incident like that. I've always seen them brushed off or heard commentators say 'there's not enough'.

I agree that the defending from the corner should have been better. We actually had an excellent record of not conceding from corners, and then in the last 2 games, we've conceded 2. Not ideal.
I still think the sequence of events that led to the goal was heavily impacted by that wrong decision to award the foul your way, though.

You can talk about players you have missing, but we had players missing too, and we have a smaller squad than yours. It's swings and roundabouts either way.

Also, I don't necessarily think you can extrapolate that beating us tonight means you will have a good season next year. You beat us at your ground most of the time anyway, for one. But also, let's be real here RCL - a soft-ish penalty, a red card within 27 minutes and the game was effectively over as a contest. Before that, there wasn't much in it for either team.

We didn't deserve to win tonight, but equally, I'm not gonna make projections about the future based off this one game.

    Nor am I.
We have scored 34 goals in our last 12 games, have got our best team spirit since 2018/19 season, have a decent style of play, have a much better defence and a very good manager.
These are reasons I am feeling able to look forward to next season. Been a while to be honest.
We are still short in terms of our squad as our bench showed: Alfie Devine, Winks, Harvey White, Matthew Craig, Bergwijn Moura, Joe Rodon, Dane Scarlet and Gollini.
That's why I mentioned our injuries....no one outside of spurs would recognise 4 of those names.

As for the red, it is worth reading the Standard where they have an article about how Arteta (when at city) told players to deliberately foul the opposition to break up play.

It looks like that was the plan but Holding went well OTT.

I feared the worst so am delighted tonight but can not see you dropping points and us winning both our games so tbh this is a small consolation for losing out on top 4.

No, we lost coz the ref couldn’t handle the occasion.

    The penalty was bullshit

The red was bullshit too, second one a yellow maybe, first one no way.

    Game died at that point.

As a neutral I can confirm a brown envelope was involved.

Penalty and red card are irrelevant. Son should have gone for the elbow before any of that happened.

NLD is always gonna be spicy. A better ref would have managed the occasion and let the passion flow. The needle would have settled down naturally but this **** decided he was going to make a headline for himself.

The pen was a ****ing joke. Pulled it out of his arse that one.

Killed the game and ruined the occasion

Refereeing in football really hasn't improved in 50-60 years

I thought last nights performance was almost clearly biased. City vs Real last week also had some ****ing atrocious refereeing. Its soo far behind most American sports (and Rugby) in this regard.

Some of the crap I’ve read this morning from alleged journalists is embarrassing <doh>

You’d think Spurs are 15 points clear and are levels ahead of us. As it stands, 4th is still in our hands and, frankly, if we can’t beat 14th placed Newcastle or 16th placed Everton to get CL football, then we don’t deserve it.

What I will say is yesterday’s game is history.

Now more than ever, we need fans, players
and management to come together and give one big final push for these last matches.

It won’t be easy, and it’ll feel like a slog at times, but we don’t have time to feel sorry for ourselves and lose confidence.

Our destiny is in our control.

If you'd said to me at the beginning of the season that we would have been 1 point clear of 5th with just 2 games to go against mid-table opposition, I would have snapped your hand off for it. We are where we want to be. We haven't played well in recent weeks, but our destiny is in our own hands and that's all we can ask for.

Agree - my main concern is our make-shift/thin defence.

But like I said in the 'Arteta out' thread this team still has those days where we don't show up at all.

We have to treat the next two games like Cup Finals.

If the Spurs game/loss had taken place when it, then four games ago (prior to the Chelsea win) we'd have been 6 points behind them and right now we'd be talking about how we'd overhauled that 6-point deficit to Spurs to overtake them to lead them by 1 point. Just need to perform against Newcastle.

Don't think we even played badly before the penalty. After it, we looked slightly rattled and then had the man sent off and it spiralled from there. Don't think Sprs created anything of note before the penalty (which came out of nowhere). Hoping and praying for a big response vs Newcastle which if we win, I think just about guarantees us a place in the top 4. I don't think Everton are going to get anything at the Emirates but let's see.

It was a game ruined by the ref. He clearly wasn’t up to the task and should be reffing games like Stevenage v Barrow if he can’t manage big occasions.

We were playing well up until he ****ed us over and Arteta is right to point out that our players had the right mentality and attitude. But 12 v 10 was always going to be an uphill task.

Anyway, we have to put this clusterfuck behind us and move on. It’s still in our hands and hopefully this injustice will motivate our players even more to get the win at Toon.

For the penalty I thought to myself: Why so quick to give that? Why hand spurs the lead they required on a plate? Seemed so odd to me; softest penalty Ive seen in the premier league this season. Reminded me a lot of the penalty Newcastle was given during the 4-4 game where we blew a 4-0 lead.

For the red: I initially thought a similar thing (why so quick and why ruin the game), but having seen it back, Holding was an idiot - it was a second yellow all day, he should have known better.

Newcastle (A) is probably the hardest 14th placed team you could possibly play in PL history - only City and Liverpool have gone there and won under Howe's tenure.

With all of your absentees and off the back of a NLD defeat it's going to be the hardest match you've played all season - harder than Brentford on the opening day in fact.

Regardless of all of this, it is a game we are perfectly capable of winning. We have gone to tougher grounds and won this season, even without key players, so none of this is justification for losing ground this late on in the top-4 race.
