What's that? A bowl of porridge made with water instead of milk?

    Not exactly nutritious.

It's not tory ideology that's the problem, it's having multi millionaire supposedly representing the common man.

Alot of labour politiacians are just as bad, but they do tend to hide it better.

The joy of party politics, people tend to vote depending on the colour that a person's tie is rather than actually looking at the person wearing it.

To my mind those two things are the same.
The rule of a privileged class over people of whom they have no understanding or empathy. A belief that they are meant to rule, rather than serve, the public.
There are stupid and corrupt people of all political persuasions, of course. It's why I distilled the question to one of political philosophy as opposed to party or personal traits.
The number of politicians who ignored Covid rules whilst others couldn't even visit dying relatives is a disgrace to the entire profession.

I agree, but its not just a Conservative party problem.

We've recently had the local elections, and despite knowing it would do nothing but piss me off I ended up taking a fair bit of interest.

Labour won here, not because the candidates where better suited, had better ideas, had some sort of qualification or history in running a bloody big council, but because people are pissed off with boris.

    It's ridiculous.

People blame the politicians, but its the public that allow them to be there. Its the public that consistently vote for the dickhead that makes them feel better about themselves.

The public moan about politicians but they get what they deserve.

I don't disagree with any of that.

You know I don't like politics at all, therefore I have little understanding of the nuts and bolts of it. For what it's worth my simplistic take on both parties is that Conservatives have never been in touch with the common man; Labour used to be in touch but have been moving and continue to move further away from it almost daily. Winning Mayfair and losing Hull tells you something.

This is very true, Conservative was for the upper class and the middle class who wished they where upper class, the margos and Jerry's.

Labour where for the working class.

These days Labour seem to have lost there way completely, they've been infested by fringe groups bleating about their own mini crusades.

They are as likely to campaign that the name guinea pig should be changed as its derogotory, or men and women should only now be known as humans as they are on Labour conditions or workers rights.

Party politics will never create a truly fair society. We have to find another way before we are all ****ed.

Not voting is a start to that process............I can't believe people still do it
Like the Republicans and Democrats in the US,and now Tory and Labour.....you can barely get a fag paper between them.

I think I said once before on here that there is a left and a right but not much, if anything, in the centre where you expect to see a balance. I actually think Starmer would fit in that central role of having no extreme views, a real sense of who he is and where he's going and a wide appeal but he has allowed himself to be pushed off course and has pandered to some groups that he shouldn't be pandering to. I think he's too nice for politics and as the old saying goes - nice guys finish last.

I read something recently which made me laugh - it's very telling about the state of politics in this country, when you are more likely to be ousted by a birthday party than the Labour party.

Not what he actually said, as usually it's been massively twisted in the school play ground politics of point scoring. There are people that don't know how to budget or cook properly and would benefit from being educated, equally there are people using the food banks that are more than capable of doing both. He didn't say all. Certainly wasn't a sensible thing to say though.

I think the question should be more about why, in this day and age whilst spending millions (if not billions) on things that don't benefit this country, people should be budgeting for 30p meals!

This!!! I work with people who claim the majority of the community around us would never vote red despite having blue elected councillor and MP in the area!

Said it was years (and was unaware that an MP had said it previous when I started) that people would vote for a donkey if you put the right blue ribbon on it!!!

Remember when Jamie Oliver got involved in the school dinners issue?
The government were allowing a desperately low cost per meal for school children iirc.
That is a crime against the people of this country.

When I look at the British conservative party these days it feels more like than the American Republican party over here than it used to when I was in England.

A lot of very un-British thoughts and ideas that I just didn't remember when I was there... Provoking the same fears and tactics as they do over here. I don't know if it's just the media showing the worst or if that's really the new reality. I used to think all main American parties were to the right of all main British parties... Doesn't feel that way since UKIP forced the Tories to the right. (And hatred against Trump caused a wild left swing for the Democrats over here).

Labour just seem to have always mixed goofy ideas with good ideas. Kinnock wanted to throw the nukes aways. Blair thought he was a Tory. And then there was Corbin... If they just let their common sense politicians lead the party they'd do better.

Read this comment earlier today... "if you can make a meal for 30p, how come school dinners cost so much"

I'm heartily sick of bloody phone menus. Whoever invented them ought to be in Hell with some appropriate Sisyphean torment.

Just thought I'd share that observation with you.

Do you mean the 'press 1 for x, press 2 for y ....' nonsense? Time wasting lunacy.

Btw I read about your tube up the nose thingy and didn't mean to totally ignore it but time got away from me - so, how is it going or how did it go?

Her Maj's government saw fit to send me a letter vaguely threatening castration or something because they'd got wind of a change in my circumstances without me informing them.
Except I had informed them, the day the change occurred and I have the electronic receipt to prove it. I tried to ring them the other day, ploughed my way through their ID process and menu system then was left listening to mind-numbing muzak for an hour until I gave up and hung up.
I tried again today, same menu process and was then told they're all far too busy to talk to me and they hung up.
I went on the webchat where a perfectly useless robot just gave me links to pages I could easily find myself. When I told it it was useless it took umbrage and suggested I phone them up.:headbang:

The nose thing - thanks for asking. It wasn't very comfortable and I wouldn't recommend it as a recreational activity, but they didn't find anything terribly sinister. It's to monitor acid reflux which can damage the muscles in the oesophagus and throat and lead to serious complications, but so far things aren't too bad. I still have the symptoms and have to try and deal with them through diet atm.

Those webchats that appear on various sites are usually pretty useful. I sorted out my new mobile phone plan via one of those because I didn't want to do it over the phone precisely because of the roundabout time wasting that you mentioned.

I'm fortunate in that I don't suffer from acid reflux at all apart from the occasional acidy burp that burns like mad and takes your breath away. I can't imagine what it's like for you if you have it constantly. I'm sure you've taken all the common 'remedies' but one thing I have heard which could help is licorice which really surprised me. Get yourself a bag of allsorts or Pontefract cakes and give it a go.

As a Brit living in the US, the only thing worse than the numerical ones are the voice recognition ones where you're supposed to say what you are calling for and it redirects you.

    They never understand me correctly.
