Because only the desperate or the idiots buy in Jan. You have to massively overpay because clubs hate to sell in Jan.
I think some people forget we have just been purchased and are not owned by someone who cannot get money out of China. We were purchased for cash with a view to improving, not losing all the investment they made. As Tom said I think it fits the narrative of some that we are 'poor little Southampton'. We aren't Newcastle or even West Ham, but we can at least hold out own now. I would make a bet with Lincoln that we will spend, but I know from last year, he doesn't seem to keep his side of the bet.
Ease up there tiger. I keep my bets. That thread where people were suggesting names was deleted (not at my request) because of accusations of bullying (also not by me) No username change was actually suggested or agreed on. Or do you think I should have stuck with one of the early options of Hitler?
How many of our signings have cost £20m? In fact virtually all the ones closer to that figure have been flops. The market has gone up as usual but with smart recruitment we can bring in a fair few players with a small-ish budget.
Yes, it's called relegation. By the way who is the new messiah who's going to move us up to the next level with, as you predict, "this summer going to be practically the same as Gao levels of spending."
So, how much? How much would we have to spend for people to be happy that Ralph has had a fair crack of the whip?
No idea, not selling key players off relatively cheaply and being able to add to the players we want to keep is the main thing for me. This summer should see nobody leaving (cheaply anyway) who we want to keep. Our main assets all have decent amount of time on their contracts. What would you consider a good season next year, assuming we are still in the PL?
I expect the new owners realize we can’t keep spending nearly zero and stay in the PL. If we don’t get players in this year then relegation is more likely with each passing year and that is independent of the manager I think.
I don't really see how anyone can be confident, either way, of what we'll do this summer. The new owners haven't had a summer transfer window, so we have no concrete evidence to go. Words aren't actions. And equally, what happened (or didn't happen) under Gao has no relevance now. I suppose you could say that I'm optimistically nervous. I'd like to think that we'll finally experience a good window. But I do worry that some people are going to be left disappointed.
If I had to put a figure on it then £50m. If we unearth foreign talent maybe less. You can’t really put a figure on it as you can buy established PL dross for £20m, or emerging talent for £5m. But if we don’t spend some serious cash we’re relegation candidates.
I've just read through that thread and I have to ask you, were you offended by CGT's obvious joke suggestion to call yourself Hitler?
So let’s say we do as you say, replace Ralph with, let’s say Eddie Howe for argument’s sake (you heard it here first), but don’t spend any money. Where do you think we’ll finish next season?
