This is from 'Kicker Sport Magazin',
    Germany's number one football mag.

"Electrifying": Tedesco praises and takes issue with Ibrox Park

RB Leipzig lost 3-1 at Glasgow Rangers on Thursday night and were eliminated from the Europa League semi-finals. Afterwards, the Saxons were quite self-critical.

"It was too little, it was not enough for a semi-final. Our performance was not enough against a team that was aggressive and emotional. We expected more, we have to analyse that," said RB managing director Oliver Mintzlaff on RTL after the match - and then followed up with a message of greeting in the direction of the second German semi-finalist: "At least a German team is in the final. Congratulations to Eintracht Frankfurt!"

The Leipzigers were self-critical about the reasons for their own elimination. "We allowed the goals too easily. The 1:0 came out of nowhere, it was their first chance. The third was also too easy, we were on the verge of making it 2:2. Benni Henrichs had a really good chance. He has to shoot," said Domenico Tedesco, alluding to a great opportunity for his team in the 78th minute at Ibrox Park - and thus shortly before the decisive 1:3 was scored on the other side.

Another reason that Leipzig coach and sporting director named in unison: "The atmosphere. It was electrifying, the best atmosphere I have ever experienced in a football stadium," said Tedesco. And Mintzlaff added: "We already knew exactly how difficult it would be in this witch's cauldron. Nevertheless, it's still different from what you expect when you experience the atmosphere yourself."

On top of that, Tedesco also said his team had "a problem with physicality" against teams that rely particularly heavily on these qualities. "We saw that against Union, where we fortunately progressed in the cup semi-final, but then also in the league. In Bergamo, too, even though we did very well there. And you saw it again today: In quite a few situations that were 50:50, they were better."

Even though the elimination hurt him a lot, Mintzlaff still tried to put his club's situation in perspective. "Our club is still young, we are in our sixth year in the Bundesliga. Of course you want to play better than today. Today is a huge disappointment, you don't come here to be eliminated. But it's no shame to be eliminated in a semi-final either."

Weak start, final's gone: RB Leipzig fail themselves at Rangers
    Leipziger Volkszeitung
    05.05.2022 / 22:54 Uhr

For RB Leipzig, it is the second time since 2020 that they have lost in a European semi-final. With a 1:3 defeat in the second leg at Glasgow Rangers, the Saxons bowed out of the Europa League. One reason for the defeat was once again a poor first half.

Glasgow. Forget Dortmund, Istanbul, Barcelona, Madrid, yes, even Leipzig. The atmosphere at Ibrox Stadium tops everything, sweeping everyone and everything away. The '12th man' must have been invented here. Here, blind understanding is required on the pitch, because you can't understand your own words. The Red Bulls did not understand blindly, had to bow to a soulful team, a stadium bending to the beat and frenetic fans. Glasgow Rangers deserved to win 3-1 and will battle Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville on 18 May for the 16-kilo Europa League trophy. RB can and must focus on the league and the German Cup now. Goals yesterday: James Tavernier scores (19th), Glen Kamara increases to 2:0 (24th), Christopher Nkunku makes it 2:1 for Leipzig (70th), John Lundstram celebrates the all-important 3:1 (81st).

Domenico Tedesco with three changes. Lukas Klostermann, Benny Henrichs and Yussuf Poulsen replace Mo Simakan, Nordi Mukiele and André Silva. Dani Olmo, recently without juice and power, starts again.

Without spirit, commitment and playful ideas, RB Leipzig were eliminated 3-1 at Glasgow Rangers in the semi-finals of the Europa League ©
Rangers had the first chance in the bubbling affair, Ryan Jack tested Peter Gulacsi with a low shot. RB joined in the fun, Willi Orban headed an Olmo corner next to Allan McGregor's goal. RB initially control the game, especially through Konrad Laimer. After a pass from the Austrian, Poulsen is blocked just before his finish. Then the roof flies off the stadium out of the cloudy evening sky, Glasgow becomes dangerous for the first time and score the 1:0. Kevin Kampl and Klostermann do not look good against Glen Kamara on the right side, Ryan Kent sprints unchallenged into the penalty area, takes a left-footed shot through Willi Orban's legs, James Tavernier holds out his foot at the far post - 1:0 (19th). Now the score is tied.

Shortly afterwards Rangers strike again. Josko Gvardiol loses the ball, RB is unsorted and tame (Angelino), Kamara nets for 2:0 (24.). Again deafening cheers that do not want to die down. Olmo has a good chance to tie the game up, but just misses. Rangers are more aggressive, more willing, have more men in the box, and have to make it 3:0 after a bad mistake by Angelino and Joe Aribo. The good news for Leipzig: Not much more happens until half-time.

Break, Rangers deservedly lead 2:0 and have one foot in the Sevilla final. Is there anything more to come from faulty and visibly impressed visitors? And who or what is coming?

Restart, RB needs a goal, and although they have a visual superiority, it does not result in top chances. When will the 40-year-old keeper McGregor have to take a dive? Dominik Szoboszlai comes on for Olmo. The RB attempts bounce off the Rangers defence like water off a duck, the fans of the 55-time Scottish champions celebrate every ball defended, every duel won, carry their team. Then, in the 70th minute, the monster chance to make it 2-1: Kampl to Nkunku, who runs into Laimer, keeper McGregor saves. Seconds later, Angelino crosses to Nkunku, who keeps the broadside, 2:1, great goal, everything open again.

RB is back and misses the 2:2 by a Poulsen-foot-tip. In the 78th minute, Henrichs is through and passes inside instead of taking a free shot. RB presses for the 2:2 and concedes the Scottish 3:1 with the first Rangers chance of the second half. John Lundstram scores after a system failure of the RB defence (81st). And, yes, a stadium of steel and concrete can shake. RB pushes and advances, Gulacsi prevents the 4:1. Then it's over. Also with the first German-German European Cup final since 1980, when Frankfurt won the Uefa Cup against Gladbach.

The exceptional luck that saw us play a two legged semi final with no fit centre forwards, lose our replacement striker who was our POTY for most of the season, lose one of best midfielders, both to injury against a team that cost £250m to assemble.

If only we had the rotten luck of being drawn against a Norwegian team 6 weeks into their close season.
