Morning, team. Firstly somewhat disappointing to see that only 3 will be running in John's Birthday race at God's own racecourse this afternoon (1.15 Newton Abbot). Poor turnout but Happy Birthday, old boy, say I. Anyway, here are a couple of notes. Star of Lady M (1.30 Chester) - this daughter of Havana Gray has really impressed in her two runs to date and looks a very, very fast 2YO. Beat Primrose Ridge (7 length winner next time) first time up. Then under a penalty romped home at Ripon by 3.5 lengths (10 lengths clear of 3rd). Takes a step up to class 2 level, this afternoon, but really should to be too good for her opponents. Substantial (7.00 Kempton) - has obviously had a few problems as this will only be the 4YO's 4th racecourse appearance. Has put up 3 creditable performances to date though and his mark of 71 appears, potentially, somewhat lenient. Today is the son of Siyouni's handicap bow. Also really rate Substantial's breeding. His dam was a Listed winner and Group 3 placed. She in turn is a daughter of, the high class, Superstar Leo (Group 2 winner, Group 1 placed). Good luck all.
Happy memories come flooding back today - 30 or so years ago I was a regular visitor to Chester's May meeting as I lived and worked on the Cheshire side of Manchester. Always loved the tight confines of the Roodeye, a big crowd on sunny spring days. Fantastic day out
Not so sure you would like it now Oddy, full of stag & hen party's most of the time nowadays, mostly with the mind set to get smashed...!!
It looks pretty soft at Chester. Could Ostilio or Ffion be advantaged by the cutting up of the ground in the lucky last? I have them down as having the best form on ground that is soft or worse. Big price is the former and the latter has a wide draw but could be bigger price than he should be with the ground.
Interesting to see two Kingman fillies in the Cheshire Oaks and it was hard not to be impressed with the debut of Night Battle at Lingfield. She was gambled in from 20/1 to 5/1 and punters might have been worried as she was very slowly out of the stalls and then pulled pretty hard for the first 1/2 mile. Still last as they rounded the final bend, she closed on the leaders under hands and heels and when asked to quicken with a crack of the whip the acceleration was immediate and decisive.
In the Class-4 NH Flat Race at Kelso (16:55) Timetotalk might cause an upset if the gelding is fit-enough after 456-day break? Jack Garritty on board for the Chris Mcsharry yard. 10/1 with BetFred best price at time of writing, but a best price of around 8/1 would be more realistic I would think?
Seems I have a bad case of 'seconditis'! What a pile of money there must have been on Timetotalk with his closing SP of 5/2? Just beaten by a 25/1 shot at the finish. Certainly looked all over the winner, but that's horseracing, can be damn tough sometimes.
