Very enjoyable game today. Small word of caution, as well as we played, Charlton were already on their summer holidays and allowed us to play however we wanted to. Of the loan players, Thompson won’t be kept and I don’t think Bonne will be either. I believe Bakinson will be signed permanently which leaves Celina. I might be in a minority here but I wouldn’t sign him as he is not consistent enough for me especially with his level of talent. Interesting summer ahead as we will find out which other players McKenna doesn’t fancy and what new signings he wants

I’ve been impressed the last two games I’ve seen how KMc has been able to motivate the side for two dead rubbers. We need to come out of the traps next Season and keep up this sort of form.We must add to the squad with quality not quantity and I’ve faith that’ll be the case.

Enjoy the Summer (if we have one!)

Good summary however I know I bang on about Norwood and I don't think he's a brilliant player but the only inconsistent thing about him is when he hasn't played either through injury, COVID or falling out of favour, every time he's played he's had an impact on the game, he scores goals, over the course of 3 seasons when it comes to minutes played he's pretty much got a goal every other game in sides which struggle to create chances. I'm struggling to remember the last striker we've had who over more than 1 or 2 seasons consistently scored when they played, maybe Darren Bent, different league but Norwood has a better record for Town than Bent.

All I can say is the club must have some good strikers to come in, if we are happy to get rid for a free one of the most consistent goalscorers I can remember playing for the club...I guess age and injury come into it. Plus we don't play direct or quick enough to get the best out of him. To be honest I'm not sure what type of player we need for this team. I think we could do a lot worse than Stockley but whether we'd be in the market for someone like him I'm not sure and whether we'd play to his strengths, probably not.

I hope I'm wrong but I have a feeling next season we could be sitting here seeing Norwood top score in league 1 (like Keane) whilst we've signed a striker who scored 20 goals in this division but we still can't score.

There are a few myths that have risen for me this season...that all we need is a 20 goal a season striker and we'll be competing for the top 2, in my mind we have a 3 strikers with that potential already, Pigott scored 20 in a struggling side, Norwoods goals per minute record for Town is very good (interested to see how this compares to other town strikers past and present), Bonne scored 11 goals in well under half a season. Another myth is that if we'd have had McKenna since the start of the season we would've been promoted, extrapolate his points per game over a full season and we still finish 7th.

I'm excited to see the type of striker we get in next season if we feel Norwood, Pigott and Bonne aren't good enough. But if we're really going to challenge next season no matter who we sign we need to create more especially getting the ball into the box quicker plus especially from set pieces. I always think one good marker to show how attacking a team are is how many penalties are awarded, we've only had 1 under McKenna, if we really we're creating more surely there'd be more penalties than that. Which is another myth that we create lots of chances...we don't.. we play nice football to get to the edge of the box the frequently recycle the ball.

I guess I'm being so critical because this looks like a really competitive division, the 6th placed team had to get 83 points, that's crazy and we need to be alot better if we're going to challenge next season. We have the ability, talent and quality but do we have the ability to do what needs to be done to win the league, I'm not sure, I haven't seen enough this season even under McKenna to say we have. Plus we now have the backing and direction to limit excuses, it finally feels like we have a manager who isn't managing with a hand tied behind his back.

Saying all this, despite the finish and overall disappointment, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed watching Ipswich this much over the course of a whole season. In recent years I'd pay my money to watch a dull as ditch water game pretty much every game I went to, this season I've pretty much enjoyed every game I've watched...I haven't said that for about 15 years.

I'd only keep Celina if we're going to play 433 next season with him wide left, I think its the position where we consistently get the best out of him. He's not disciplined enough to play left midfield, and I feel he goes missing too much when he plays centrally. He's best for me when running at the full back.

It'll be interesting to see whether McKenna sticks to the same formation next season, as it feels like the current 5221 or 3421 suits some of our players but not others.

Sorry to redact your post itfcptc but for me this sums up exactly how I feel about being a Town fan at present.I remember a long gone member of this forum and all he was interested in was the result, but for me the most important thing is enjoying the bi-weekly trips to PR and over the last year it’s certainly been more enjoyable.

I’d definitely keep Celina as an impact player.

But can we afford in League 1 to have a player like this as an impact player?

Very good, positive, realistic posts. As one delirious madly passionate Town fan who cant get to live games, I too feel the joy and happiness at watching much more attractive performances. I hope to be fit enough to drive up next September.

Itfcpc correctly points out Nors record and what a difference the more direct free flowing style gives him the chances to score again. And Bonne too oh so nearly! Trouble is for most games our style didnt suit our forwards. I suspect itfcpc has a framed picture of all 3 strikers in his bedroom ha ha!

Keep Celina, when he plays like that, giving astonishing passes, he is a great asset, Championship stuff. He doesnt like playing the dross. And I like Kosovo, spent happy, challenging months there on humanitarian work.

I liked KM hugs for Nors at the end, nice farewell. He said "Just dont bang them in against us next season!"

I think Celina would thrive in a new format, out left as you suggest. Of course we can afford him, to leave talent like that on the bench is silly!

On the subject of Norwood PTC, yes he comes in and scores every now and again. About a goal every three appearances on average. There’s no doubt he knows how to find the net when he’s on a run but he doesn’t give us anything else. He doesn’t create chances, have any pace, score set pieces, he’s rarely at full fitness. There’s a long list of stuff he doesn’t bring.

McKenna is a stats man. He will be looking at all the performance indicators. Aside from the ability to find the net, Norwood’s will be awful.

I'm not even that huge a fan of our forwards although they are decent for this level, I just get frustrated by in my mind the myth that all we need is a decent striker and we will score goals. In my view we have had the fire power at the club this season we just haven't got the best out of our strikers and that has been our biggest flaw this season and I think its got worse under McKenna. Even in the recent Wigan game we dominated them but we had so many opportunities to put the ball in the box early or be abit more direct and we didn't, we want to score the perfect goal and play back to front all the time and recycle the ball too much. Yes strikers miss chances but I can't recall this season being any different to others, in the games I've seen there haven't been a hatful of chances missed.

I think part of my frustration is often over the years we've played a bit more direct or put the ball in the box early but not had strikers taking up good positions in the box. Both Bonne and Norwood are really good at taking up good positions in the box we just haven't got it into the enough or quick enough.

With regards to Norwood if you look at minutes played its rough 1 every 180minutes over his time here...I wonder the last striker to do that? And for me he gives alot more than Jackson who I assume we are keeping on, he's a nuisance to defenders, he does all the things we say this team needs more of. When him and Jackson played together at the start of our League 1 experience in my view he was one of the main reasons Jackson scored so many goals at the start. He's got 3 assists from 12 starts this season extrapolate hus form over a full season and that would be about 12 assists and 24 goals. Given he doesn't have any pace the number of goals he's scored on the last shoulder of defenders for us is pretty good. He scored set pieces when Garbutt was in the team but unfortunately no one has scored from set pieces this season...not even penalties, for such an attacking team with the talent we have you would've thought we'd be scoring more from set pieces and getting penalties but we're not. The only thing I can agree with is his injury record but up until this season the number of players who've been injured has been ridiculous....look at the seasons Will Keane and McGoldrick had after leaving Ipswich.

Much like last season I like our manager but I do think some of his decisions/tactics are odd but I'm willing to trust his judgement as someone who knows the game alot better than I do.

What type of striker do you think we should be looking at?

We’re crying out for a partnership where we have a pacey striker getting behind the defence and a centre forward who is good with their feet, can hold the ball up and composed around the 18 yard box. Then we need good options to come off the bench.

We need more than one striker and they’ll be looking at statistics. They’ll be looking at the most important factors for winning games - whether that’s goals, pace, shots on and off target, inside and outside the box, set pieces, good in the air, assists, passes, heat maps.

I’m not sure if I trust McKenna and the club to find the right mix on the basis of the last few months but we shall see.

Well that was as close to the perfect end of season match as you can get.

4 goals scored and plenty of attacking play, with some great passes and interplay seen throughout the match. Burns got two and deservedly ended up top scorer, Bakinson scored a worldy and Cameron Humphreys got an assist for Norwood's final goal for Ipswich.

I thought Bakinson had his best game for us and I want us to sign him in the summer. He wins aerial balls in the middle, drops back seamlessly into defence when Woolfy ventures forward and has an eye for the difficult pass. Him and Morsy have been working well together. If Morsy had scored at the end of a flowing move that would easily have been the team goal of the season. It was just a great game of football and shows what we can can do when everyone is on it from start to finish.

I look forward to next season and to see the recruitment over the summer. There are some positions that need attention but I thought Penney played well and could make that position his. The defence is solid with good options, Donacien, Woolf, Edmundson, Burgess and Baggott have those positions covered so I doubt we'll look too much at this area of the pitch for improvement. Midfield is not too bad either with Morsy, Evans, Bakinson and Idris but if we can get somebody in to improve our forward play then that would be good. I'm glad that Aluko will be with us again next season. I know many (especially on TWTD) have moaned about Sone not getting any assists but that's generally been because he's played the pass before the assist. In other words, he assists the assist. I'd like to see his stats for key passes, with him it's not always the one that leads directly to a goal but the pass just before that gets another player free to provide the assist. Strikers is an area to be looked at as we're not sure who will be with us, with Bonne on loan and Norwood departing we could be looking at adding numbers here. I wonder if we keep Piggott?

Anyway, it was a very enjoyable game and if we can put performances like that on consistently we will have a good season of very watchable football to entertain us next year.

And if we can be entertained as royally in that game and make a big early push for top 6 and compete at the top next season, we will all be even happier! As most know I am a fan of Celina and Aluko, both playmakers of Championship class.

As I’ve said before SD, I think Piggott stays for no other good reason than his contract, worth £1m in wages to him over the next two years. Not many League One clubs will pay those wages for anybody, let alone someone out of form for a year. And that’s before any transfer fee. Maybe a Championship side would take a punt - but I can’t see it.

I wouldn't be surprised if KVY moves on to get more game time somewhere else.

Fleetwood away. Piggott’s best game IMHO. Unlucky to hit the post. Jackson scored. 2-0.

I think we might see something of Ben Morris next season. Very good player before his injury.
