Aye, it's always money, as it is for all of us.

But a rolling contract is a stop gap approach IMO. If Burnley knocked on the door today with a three year deal, what would AN be expected to do?

 

You do have a point regarding money playing a part but what would be the biggest challenge with the better reward and satisfaction - taking Burnley back up to the prem or taking Sunderland up to the championship and THEN going for the prem?

 

If they go down they may well be in bother, something to do with loan taken for takeover has to instantly repaid in full if relegated...rumours that was linked with jumping the gun & sacking Dyche....odd there was no plan for someone to come straight in day after....sounds familiar

 

I do think our plan was set for Neil to come in. Then the Keane furore happened. Put the cat amongst the pigeons and the rest, as they say, is history. Only speculation mind with a few “apparent ITKs” saying similar. But I never know who’s itk or not!!!

 

Cant see it myself, reads like guesswork. Wilder is going there, worst kept secret im football probably. I really dont think Neil's stock is that high in football, which at the moment suits us just fine.

 

Agree mate. I think Defoe was the final straw with LJ and the club, along with the club trying to sell Flannagan and Gooch which he wouldnt have wanted. I would bet good money there was a showdown before Bolton, he looked completely frazzled that day. He may well have gone anyway for the football results, but I am sure Defoe and Gooch/Flannagan were the accelerators, we were oddly still 3rd despite the form.

We can point to many instances in the season which have cost us. The two games after Johnson went and before Neil came in though for me are the most crucial. I think, like others, Keane should never have been entertained. If Neil had wandered in the day after Johnson went we would not have lost to the two bottom teams. Even if Johnson had been kept on until we got Neil we would have more points now. All in my opinion of course. Those 2 games are the worst I can remember - they were worse than the hammerings. You could see players were shot to bits and as Hoffman hinted at were shocked he had gone. Also as Hoffman said there were no game ideas from the touchline. I remember feeling sorry for the 2 lads in charge because they were clearly miles out of their depth. Considering we have such a young squad in those 2 games they needed leadership and guidance as many will never have experienced a manager being sacked. Unfortunately the incompetence associated with entertaining Keane meant they had none.

For some reason Speakman and co completely lost all reason during a 3/4 week window. Defoe should never have been a consideration and nor should Keane. It is like we allowed a fan to play fantasy foorball with the club for a few weeks, whereas up to that point everything had been so good from Speakman and co. The good thing now is we have Alex Neil righting the ship, but I best he wishes he had those 2 games back...

 

No truth in that at all. There's no way Alex Neil is only 40 for a start, unless he had a paper round in Beirut.

 

Agree with you mate, looking more & more the case now....like Alex Neil more see of him, know hes doimg well but just seems to see the changes that are needed, not afraid to grind games out when needed & talks sense in my eyes

 

From our point of view its us.

But other people, including managers, will see a club where, despite changes in ownership, managers don't get much more than a year. The fact that AN only has this one year rolling deal will only emphasise this impression.

So , though Burnley look like they are heading for financial trouble if they go down, and are worth avoiding, still a longer deal there would be attractive, as barring liquidation, footballers and managers get paid anyway.

Let's just hope he keeps up the good work and gets a proper deal here. He seems to fit.

 

I think he will be rewarded at the end if the season with a 3 year deal. Any manager for me who is happy to sign a 1 year deal is either aware they are a stop gap until the next bloke os available and happy with that or they back their ability to impress in that time and get a more long term deal with a wage increase.

 

Everyone seems to think the 1 year contract clause was the club's idea. If he had lots of ambition, he may well have seen a longer contract as a way of hindering a move for him to a championship club if we didn't get promoted. I think that particular deal suited both parties tbh.

 

KLD and Sartori there yesterday, no mention of meetings or whatever ...

... I have no problem with either of them.
