Although I was one of the lunatics behind the goal at the other end that was such a fab feeling when that hit the back of the net.
Cambridge fan here. Really looking forward to visiting Sunderland and our first ever visit to Stadium of Light tomorrow as I’ve heard nothing but good things about coming to Sunderland (and the North-east in general) as an away supporter. Plus I couldn’t make our FA cup win over Saudi FC so definitely wasn’t going to miss this game. As for our midweek result and our starting line up compared to the Wigan game, a defence. It was a surprise to everyone that he made 7 changes, we thought maybe 4 at the most. One of the 7 was due to injury, our LB who is out for season so that’s one explained. We have a small squad on a bottom half of league 2 budget, we lost our 30+ goals goal machine to Wrexham and didn’t sign a replacement plus like most clubs lost about 5 first choice players through injury for at least 2 months each at various points in the season inc our club captain who got a season ending injury in the 2nd league game of the season. A couple of these players made their first starts in the league since injury on Tuesday night so it could be considered we were strengthening the team. But there were a few home fans not happy with the amount of changes either citing the same reasons as several people on here on earlier pages. The Wigan performance was our best away performance of the season and some of those who put in such a shift deserved a well earned rest for a dead rubber game against Charlton who also had nothing to play for. As most predictions had us down in 24th or at best 23rd place, I think Mark Bonner has earned the right and then some to put out whatever team he wants after securing mid table mediocrity with about 6 games to go. We’ve never been in the relegation zone all season and this has a been a season for the ages both on and off the pitch as we are also in the stages of buying our stadium back from the landlords and investing heavily in our training ground. And we will probably finish top half with 2 good results. So it’s a brilliant situation that we could travel to Ipswich, Wigan and now Sunderland completely worry free from relegation. And pick up 2 wins so far. As for tomorrow we will probably put out the same team as Wigan bar a change at LB and hopefully play the same way. Hoolahan won’t play or be on bench as he played 90 on Tuesday and doesn’t do 2 games in 5 days. We don’t play beautiful football but it can be effective and when we score first in a game, we usually are good for at least a point as we are very well drilled and can stick to a game plan. But if you score early on, you are likely to run out comfortable winners. Keep an eye out for our winger James Brophy who got Sky MOM against Wigan and is in fantastic form and loves dribbling the ball up the pitch to relieve pressure and will win free kicks for us in good positions. Plus expect some high quality “game management “ from us if we take the lead although not quite Diego Simone teams levels. We’ve won our last 3 away games but realistically I don’t think we can make that 4 in a row. I think we could grind out a 1 1 draw if we score first and if the home support gets on the home team’s back the longer it goes on. Good luck for your play off hopes after Saturday.
Are you cycling up? Only joking. I hope you have a great day, apart from between the hrs of 3pm to 5pm. You will find plenty of pubs and a welcoming set of fans who will have a bit chat. We aren't the arrogant arseholes some other L1 teams make us out to be. Fair play to yous for coming up from L2 and staying up. I've gone for 3-1 to us but I don't think it will he easy.
It’s sad that Cambridge (H) in a league fixture is such a big game but it’s where we’re at… Hopefully the last time we ever face such opposition in the league. Come on Sunderland
No offence to you mate and, you can be sure of a good welcome in Sunderland. I have to say though I'm tired of people trotting out the 'we're just a little club with a little budget' routine. That's fair enough but it's too often used as a reason to cheat or 'game manage' as you call it, Gillingham were on recently with the same patter. Keeping hold of the ball is one thing, going down 'injured' and bringing the trainer on for a chat is just cheating. And I have to repeat what I said earlier about the 7 changes. I don't believe you'd be so eager to shrug it off if Sunderland 'rested' 7 players if they were up against a team you were in a relegation/promotion fight with. It smacks of Bonner looking to make a name for himself instead of entertaining 5000 home fans who'd paid good money. It sounds as if the Cambridge performance was abysmal. If that's what you're happy to settle for then fair enough I suppose.
*double like* Sick and tired of these "small clubs with a small budget just happy to be here". The one on WTF podcast the other day was talking about Cambridge as if they were Man City
Top thread again mate. Just a monumental game. Really looking forward to it. Straight at them from minute one. Haway the lads. A win is essential.
Yet another vital game and a win is a must. 3 points, and I don't care how they come, plus a win for Wigan and we go up 2 places irrespective of Wycombe and Sheff Wed result. Come onnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!
