It was a good game to watch. Early on I thought we had a good ref, giving a yellow card for a bad challenge in the first half hour. How wrong was I? He turned out to be terrible! Somebody needs to have a word with Morsy to not let people wind him up. Bennett was totally pushing his head towards Samy when we had a free kick. He ignored it, ignored it and then had enough and nudged his head forward and Bennett dropped like he'd been hit by a sniper. It was embarrassing and a complete con on the ref. When Penney was tackled strongly later on I swear Morsy said something like "you would've booked me for that" because the ref chuckled. The game was yet another case of going down injured, holding head to make sure of stoppage and general dirty play.

The defence was solid, until Penney went off. Thompson totally at fault for the second goal, did not close his man down at all. Bakinson was good, his height is of great help in the middle and I thought he broke up play well and made a number of interceptions. He does have to work on his passing though. He has vision, he sees good options but he often gets the weight of the pass wrong and it either doesn't make it or it's too strong to control. Chaplin was good, Burns was good.

We'll probably change it around a bit for the final games as they are not going to be important for final league standings, we had to put a strong team out against Wigan for the integrity of the league.

Very good points SD. Those incidents involving Morsy, the Bennett wind ups, and subsequent incidents downfield with Woolfy making a crass tackle, resulted in a goal. He is our captain and needs to lead by example; and one of our best and most likeable players missing games a season through suspension because he keeps getting booked and can’t control his emotions. KM knows he must deal with this.

One or two confirmed their future for me, Bakinson ( apart from his stray passes) and Penney both played themselves into our plans for next season. Thompson did not!

I’m not sure about the integrity of the league thing SD. I’m not in favour of wholesale changes but I think we have more chance of scoring goals if we freshen it up a bit.

You’re dead right about Morsy and Norwood has a similar temperament.

Watching the Chelsea v Arsenal match on the back of Tuesday night it’s obvious just how much of a weakness we have down the left hand side. It doesn’t only hurt attacks that develop down that side but affects the options for the central players moving the ball, how we attack crosses from the right, how we turn possession over when an attack breaks down or we miss our target in the box.

We can probably afford to make a bit of a trade off and take more risks at the back by sending the left centre back in support of an attack minded left sided player to match what Donacien does down the right.

I don't think we need wholesale changes although strengthening LWB and CM would be a priority for me.

Upfront even if we do strengthen and sign players who fit in with how McKenna wants we need to improve the supply and support to the main striker, even when Bonne was on a scoring streak I've only seen our strikers not look isolated a couple of times and that was the Doncaster and Gillingham games. Even though our general play was very good up to the edge of the box on Tuesday on too many occasions we tried an intricate pass or held onto the ball for too long, on the couple of occasions we put the ball into the box early we scored or looked dangerous....hate to say it after complaining for years about it under Mick but we do need to play the percentages more. We play a very similar way to what England played last summer which equally produces similar results...lots of possession not many chances conceded but not many chances created either. Kane drops deep because he's often isolated but the difference is (apart from the calibre of player) you have Sterling who stretches the game and gets in behind. Whilst I thought we were generally the better team overall against Wigan they were good at the things we weren't, like set pieces, their forward play was very good, I know Keane possesses a lovely touch but the ball was often played early into him, it was purposeful and when he got the ball he had options. Our strikers very rarely get involved in general play because we either pass our way up the pitch and it breaks down before they can do anything or they are trying to chase down a clearance (not an intentional long ball) with little support around them...it's something we clearly don't work on (long balls).

I'm not saying I want us by any means to be a long ball team but you can play intentional long passes which we don't seem to do at all. Under all the managers I saw prior to ME we were good footballing teams but played intentional long balls sometimes into the forward players whether that be under Burley with Scowcroft or Armstrong (even Marcus Stewart) through Venus or McGreal at the back, under Royle we did this so much and played off the second ball and under Magilton playing a long ball up to Walters on the right was so effective. If we're going to compete next season we need to be able to mix it up a bit more, get the ball into the forwards quicker and put more balls into the box...both Norwood and Bonne are decent at attacking crosses in the box and we also have a number of players behind them who make good late runs into the box where they could pick up the scraps i.e. Morsey, Burns and Chaplin. I've also noticed that because we play our way through the pitch alot of teams back lines stay in shape because all the play is infront of them and they rarely have to move out of line, mixing it up with players getting beyond the striker would change this.

Speaking of mixing it up, it's a tough one with Norwood and Morsey because we do need that competitive edge and we haven't got many players who do that, it's knowing when to keep that in check and not getting wound up but doing the winding up.

Whatever happens the balance down the left hand side and upfront needs to be looked at as there has been something missing all season even prior to McKenna coming in. Something else I noticed which I hadn't really thought about before was how often our strikers get the ball wide left I'm guessing because that is where there is space because we don't have the LWB or LCB pushing up as much as on the right hand side. It'd be interesting to see the heat maps to see whether that is the case....the problem with it though is none of our strikers are left footed and when playing with 1 striker you want them to be the ones in the box getting on the end of crosses.

Yep. Particularly when Norwood’s played he wanders out left and then there’s nobody for him to pick out in the middle!

We get caught offside far too often too. Things like that where we don’t need to radically change things - a sharp striker in form will make all the difference as all the little details add up to more goals. Direct set pieces would be another one.
