MacG, Clare, Pearce, Famewo, Matthews, Dobbo, Morgan, Gilbey, CB-T Burstow, Stockley Why Burstow not Leaburn or Kanu?
Morecambe scored 2 good goals by playing good passing moves into the box. We just lob it in when we get near goal.
It seems the engineering works didn't stop our team making it to the beach Enjoy your summer holiday boys. Only four or five of you need bother coming back for pre-season.
Problem is I really didn't see a lack of effort from us. We started very fast and direct. Morecambe began to press up the field and hit us on the bresk, and the pace just leaked out of us, and we began to drift into that sideways and backward passing that does no damage to the opposition. We needed players making runs up top, but also midfielders who took advantage of that. Lots of room for more creative players, better defenders and a Lyle Taylor type striker.
Dobbo and CBT are good players who could play at a higher level, I don't think you could say that about any of the others.
Wat I saw was our players knocking it about like they were playing an exhibition match for the first fifteen minutes, and Morecambe looking like the most harmless team to visit the Valley this season. After that point they had sussed out everything we had to offer, and just played basic football in a neat and tidy manner. I only saw any effort going in from our players after half time. And then a careless clearance from MacGillivray undid the progress we had begun to make. We were sloppy and slapdash and we got punished, by a team we should be eating for breakfast in any kind of passable season. Charlton are truly as far away from being a Championship team as we have ever been. By a distance.
Upper North spent most of the second half singing the Song for Sebbo or the We Are The H-Block etc chant. There was absolutely nothing about our style of play to get the fans excited. Those who took up the free tickets won't be spending money to watch us passing the ball slowly around, ending with a hopeful lob in the general direction of a tall centre-forward being marked by two tall centre-halves. Two home matches on the trot now we have had away fans celebrating We Are Staying Up due to their superiority on our own ground.
It's been a poor season. The tail end was never likely to be better than the rest. The worry is JJ seems to be seeing a lot better football than the rest of us. The sideways football would be better if it was finished off with devastating attacking pace. If we finish it by hoofing into the box, we can cut out the middle man and just hoof. It also worries me CBT looks great, but doesn't defend well. In a 3-5-2 he needs to cover back, but he is an out and out winger. If we keep him with a better contract(and we should) we need to change the system. Stockley finishes well, but he doesn't convince me with the rest of his play. This squad needs a big overhaul. But I'm not sure the managerial trick of square pegs in round holes isn't causing problems too. I hate the instability of changing manager, but JJ isn't convincing me at all.
posted this on twitter last night, "Bowyer close to the sack at Birmingham. Playing a 5-3-2 formation with players out of positions if you go by the twitter comments. Wonder if someone should show jacko." we were awful yesterday. my kids were so bored. my boy looked confused at some of the things we did as it's not what he would do on fifa. the fact we have no plan B or secondary formation really worries me. can see a rough start to next season followed by jacko being sacked by xmas
That's what I find frustrating. When we get pegged back, or simply can't open the opposition, we change the players (sometimes) but the formation stays relentlessly the same. Really, when something isn't working, you need to wonder about the mentality of still doing it months later.
