No I don't agree I thought it was a good interview. The over training comment I don't like, but sort of understand. If you're winning regularly then you take the physical stress better because you are in a good mental place. If you are losing regularly then the opposite happens. It's also possible that during Bielsa's losing streak the solution could have been seen to train and push harder, thus exacerbating the issue. Having key players out injured wasn't helping either. Maybe we've all become accustomed to the enigmatic interviews that Bielsa gave and when somebody just talks then it's seen as hogging the microphone. Anyway I really couldn't care what he says on talksport as long as Leeds win.
It’s not just this interview mate, he does it all the time. The only coaches that usually love to sit behind a microphone are the ones that have to tell you how good they are or what’s happening because you can’t see it with your own eyes. If we keep winning and do well next season I’ll forgive him and ignore the things I dislike. I have serious doubts he is the right man for the job, we’ll see
That's the only interview of his I've seen, but yes if he does it all the time it could be OTT for English taste, but for the US or here if something is worth saying then say it as often as you can and even repeat it in the same sentence, just to make sure everybody understands what you've said. EDIT - No that's a lie I saw an interview just after he had been appointed.
Totally agree that he needs to shut up and let the results do the talking. Let's see if he's still talking the talk after playing Man City & Chelsea.
JM’s Comment is correct in my view. But he was Unwise to say it. I think your assessment is spot on Eric. The famous bielsaball burnout that people argue intensely about is really about stress. 1. Mental fatigue/stress 2. Long term physical stress it’s why you see ‘evidence’ of it sometimes in his career and not others. It likely isn’t helped by bielsa’s own reaction to defeats… he’s historically confessed to suicidal thoughts after them. It doesn’t lighten the dressing room mood. Anyone remember coops talking about mental fatigue after our promotion collapse in bielsa year 1? Bielsa was a genius and rightly revered for everything he did for us, but his training methods are controversial. I can absolutely understand why marsch would want to say what he did but he should have resisted the temptation. Matt has new click bait material for his content machine… and this one will run and run
he was still rabbiting on after we got battered by Villa… so I think we’ll still be hearing from him #steeplearningcurve
1. rich… Why is it that in professional football no other team employs bielsa’s methods? They’re not cloaked in secrecy. What is it that his ‘team’ see in his approach to fitness that the rest of the world somehow miss? Is it possible given what we know about his micro control that he hires people to implement his methods rather than hires best in class people and tells them to implement their methods? 2. see your point - I see it as him trying to be open and honest and he’s answering lots of questions on similar topics from people. So it’s repetitive. I think his answers on new questions are generally quite incisive and interesting. Take point 1 for example . I liked his car door example - summarising the challenge of breaking habits. 3. Get you don’t like Marsch, but You’d have been glued to it had it been bielsa? Really? His post match interviews were indentikit. 10 minutes of rambling to say a defeat was his fault and the opposition had more positive actions? Humble and respectful - always. fair in assessment of whether a win or defeat was deserved? Always. But riveting and insightful? Not for me. people are going to compare the two, it’s inevitable. Bielsa was brilliant for us in so many ways. Marsch and bielsa share some footballing philosophies but not much else in their own style or approach. I’m just taking an ‘embrace the differences’ attitude for now
I suspect, but I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, that he will have a contractual obligation to be interviewed so in all probability he will not be able to be silenced. Giving an interview to talksport is probably not a contractual obligation though. Watching the interview I think the point was made however that it was arranged by Leeds.
it was… and I actually think the point was pre-meditated. Maybe 6 weeks of Marcelo was great blah blah to keep the fans placated was enough. Now on the back of a few wins was deemed the appropriate time to start to say why marsch is actually here. fits with a pr/media strategy. Also absolves the players from blame for the season. Two parts to that… a public nod to the players that they have given everything and it’s not their fault that they’ve been flogged… that they are good enough if fit/fresh. a nod to the fans that the players are good enough so we don’t need wholesale changes in the summer. So was Jesse just radz’ mouthpiece?
noted. Though I was only agreeing with you because you made points I have made previously. Hope that exonerates me
None of us know the answer mate we can only guess. Think how long it takes Orta to find a suitable candidate for signing (under Bielsa). This is why I said we’ll never be top 6 under him, he requires players who run their arse off, do the other stuff, one ounce of attitude that requires a different approach and Bielsa wasn’t interested, this is where Marsch will be hugely different. Bielsa had analysts looking at players fatigue levels, watching the distance covered during a game, the Price guy is said to be one of the best in the game. 2. What other managers sit through a talk sport interview like that, the Villa game, anytime there is a microphone he is there. 3. That’s wrong mate, as a person Marsch seems a nice guy, it’s true I don’t like the fact he loves the microphone but I’ll live with that if he gets results. Bielsa had to do his obligatory after match interview, he made it as short as he could, that’s different to volunteering to go on talk sport and coming out after your obligations have been met on match day to speak again. I think back to Bielsa after Derby accused him of cheating, that was interesting, yes I was glued to what he had to say. Just because I wonder if Marsch is the right man for the job it doesn’t mean I won’t support him, it doesn’t mean I didn’t think Bielsas time was nearing the end. Marsch will (in my opinion) excel in man managing the players, the arm around the shoulder approach, I’m looking forward to seeing new signings, I wonder if we’ll get old targets that Orta deemed suitable yet Bielsa said no. I’ll give Marsch a transfer window and a dozen games into next season before deciding if he’s the right guy. I think the Orta/Bielsa transfer approach has been shocking, I’m not sure which one to blame for that. I fear this fitness thing will bite us, we’re still mainly that championship winning side that looked anything like a winning side until Bielsa came in and installed his methods into the players. Take Klich as an example, loaned out and no place in the team prior to Bielsa. Bielsa takes hold of him and we have a couple of seasons of a player who would be amongst the first names down on the team sheet. This season his legs look heavy, he looks like that player who we loaned out. Bamford does all that “other stuff” that Bielsa demanded, a small cog in the big wheel. If Bamford doesn’t need to do that “other stuff” he’s going to be a bang average player when he returns who frustrates us by missing more than he scores.
I read that Bielsa in pre-season had increased the intensity levels in each of his previous seasons. He upped it again in the summer and the output stats clearly showed it. Maybe the wheels came off when all the injuries kicked in and almost everyone was expected to play out of position. Maybe its not the intensity, its just having that intensity and having to play out of your normal position and having to carry out your job in an unfamiliar role. The mental hit causes the problem not the physical. i thought Pep summed it up great yesterday when he said if Bielsa had Barcelona they would win everything and if I had Leeds Utd I would get them relegated. We will never know the realty, but I bet City will want to inflict carnage on Leeds because of Bielsa
