The French presidential election is getting interesting, and by interesting I naturally mean utterly terrifying. Le Pen is pulling her usual 20ish percent in first-round polling, but she's suddenly pulling more of the run-off vote against Macron. Enough that she could potentially win. This should be a real opportunity for LFI, the left-socialist party whose candidate is sitting third, to make a strong case that getting their candidate (Jean-Luc Melenchon) into the runoff ahead of Le Pen is the best way to stop her, and if all of the votes going to left/socialist/Green candidates coalesced behind him, they almost definitely would succeed. But the left is nothing if not capable of self-immolating over small differences, so the odds are good that those votes will instead be split six ways and the runoff will again be between Macron and Le Pen. Sigh.
So the left wing seem to behave pretty much the same in every country. And doubly so in those where they are really needed. At least you can set your clock by it
