Wonder what the retained list will look like for the youngsters. Have a feeling we may see 1/2 that we may go on to look back at like **** why did we do that.
There’s a hell of a lot of them out of contract not many of them have been at Cottingham for a while either.
I think you will see a lot of change this summer, both in the younger age groups and first team squad. Billy Chadwick and Ahmed Salem may well be moved on, they both did okay at Linfield, but are they good enough for us going forward? There are a few hard decisions to make!
Plenty of them would’ve been looking to breakthrough over the next season or 2 had the previous regime still been in place. Had we gone down this season plenty of them would’ve been looking at a potential breakout season next year.
Am I right in thinking there’s a limit for the amount of players you can send out on loan coming in next season too? Not sure if it affects all age groups or just senior players but think it was designed to stop teams like Chelsea stockpiling players. Could be another thing that influences whether some players are given a new deal or not.
Not sure of the numbers but you're spot on about the thinking behind it. Chelsea have been turning loans into a major industry with ridiculous numbers of players being loaned with the sole intention of enhancing value. From what I've read it doesn't apply so much to younger lads and academy players but the system has become a mockery with some clubs almost surviving on loanees. Swindon and Lincoln are examples. We all know that smaller clubs are often struggling financially but the loan system as it stands isn't helping the game in the broader sense.
Possibly so, but I always felt even before the change that with some this was the year that decisions on them would be made, and Chadwick and Salem being 2 of them. There seem to be a lot of trialists in the U23's and U18's games these days, but I still feel the new owner is keen on developing the academy.
Burnley and England U18 midfielder. The other trialist is another U18 from Burnley, Jack Leckie (centre back).
