So sad to hear it has ended like this, and so soon. Best of luck to him in whatever he decides to do next.
I reckon coaching must have been discussed prior to resigning as retiring must have been on his mind, don’t see why he couldn’t do both like
theres no statement there. Admin had written a news story and pasted in Defoe’s statement. he could frankly have even rushed this out once he’d seen Defoe had posted it. nothing from Speakman, KLD or Neil which is very weird for any departure, let alone one high profile, no?
No idea mate, all we know is that he's gone. Feck knows whats happened between January and now to make him decide to leave with only 2 months of the season left
Statement is on the club website, and more news will inevitably follow , but it seems to have been his own decision by all accounts.
Defoe to talkSPORT: "For me, it is the right time. From the outside people probably think he still looks sharp. "But to be honest, as you get older, it doesn't get any easier. "I didn't really want to block the pathway of someone younger or coming back from injury." #SAFC could be good news RE Broadhead
I cant understand why he signed in the first place then? Whats happened in 2 months? I think its what i mentioned earlier about him underestimating the league and his ability to compete to the level he wanted/expected to
Fletcher was never the same again for us after being injured playing for Scotland , took up POLO ing when he came back ,[/QUOTE] Neither was Kenwyne after playing in that meaningless friendly against England. Cheers David James ya twat!
Very strange. Surely he knew if his body was up to it or not 2 months ago. Leaves us very short of options up top.
This leaves a sour taste in the mouth for me. Maybe there is more to come as to the reasons for this, I hope there is.
He was talking about "One last dance", 2 months ago and now this. What a fecking weird season this has been.
Took us a whole month to sign him then he was gone in less than 2 a sceptic would say the transfer made him more current and relevant again after two years doing nothing in Scotland, and so the move got what he wanted in terms of being in the news again. His immediate jumping into SSN and talksport doesn’t exactly fill me with the thinking that this was done with anything in mind other than his next job. And he’s been on super Sunday the last 2 weeks. Personally I reckon he’s come back and realised he spent too long doing little and just can’t cope with the pace nowadays. I have absolutely no issue with that. What I do find more confusing is that he announced it before the club, and then the club haven’t made a statement, other than a pretty generic news story that copy and pastes his public statement. From what I’ve seen he’s not even made a specific statement to Sunderland fans. Just one to the world and all the media orgs. And the club hierarchy haven’t made a statement about him. so I bear no grudges to him, but it definitely feels to me like there was a falling out, possibly over the timing of this. Wouldn’t surprise me if Speakman is as big a **** as some say he is. good luck to Jermain. Will forever be a legend here
