Forgot to mention and ask for views concerning Ukraines banning of 11 Political Parties, including one that held 44 seats in the Ukrainian Parliament…….just part of the conflict as these parties are predominantly Left Wing/Socialist and seen as “Pro Russia” ? Or is it a worrying attack on democracy? Genuinely (I have to say that) interested in peoples views.

It’s a war, propaganda flooding in from all sides. I don’t know if the Russians are really targeting hospitals, buildings like the theatre which was destroyed etc etc (I suspect they are, but I don’t know) but you can guarantee that the Ukrainians are surrounded by war crimes stories all the time, and revenge is a powerful emotion, and the Russians are being told that their soldiers are heroes fighting Western fascists, and most of them believe that too. It’s hard enough to judge what is true and what is fake nowadays in what passes for normal times, in war I have no idea how you triangulate and verify the stories. I’ve mentioned it before but I am re reading Savage Continent by Keith Lowe, an account of the orgy of revenge and violence that went on after the end of the Second World War. This is meticulously researched history, and it’s sickening. I can believe humans, and ordinary humans at that, are capable of the greatest acts of inhumanity when driven by vengeance and desperation.
Yeah I take your point G….however I’m still a bit nervy about the banning…..just seems totally “undemocratic” and smacks of a true dictatorship. Of course Putin would do just as bad, if not worse….however aren’t these meant to be the good guys ? On LotusEaters…..I’ve actually been watching a lot of their stuff, and even though they aren’t politically on my side…I do find their stuff quite interesting and the people on it seem alright and well read, with the shows seemingly well researched. Really would like to read that book you’ve mentioned, might have to download it on to the kindle, but I struggle to get anytime these days with work/kids/running/podcasts and Spanish (62 day streak on Duolingo).Planning on possibly cutting down my hours in a few years time and drawing on my pension….hopefully free up more time for golf and reading

Yes mate all truly shocking and horrible to watch. I’ve seen many of those videos of people taped to lamposts and beaten and it’s seems very common, especially for alleged looters……but didn’t realise the possible, anti-ethnic Russian slant of some of it.
