Desperately in need for CB cover, but who...?

  1. It's been quite obvious for a while that Perch is ****, and Williamson isn't bad but not that great either.

Santon could perhaps fill in at CB if we need him to, but I'd rather we went after a strong, quite experienced CB to cover Saylor and Colo.

With Saylor we've only conceded 6 goals against 9 top level teams, without him we've conceded 9 goals against Forest, Scunthorpe and Blackburn. Most of the 9 goals were due to weakness in defense.

Who should we go for though?

I don't care about signing another striker now, not until we've got defensive cover sorted out because we can score goals, but we're ****e and weak without our two strongest CB's.

I'm happy with Simmo, Santon, Ferguson and Raylor as our fullback options, this area is covered for the moment at least. Willo isn't bad, but he's weak for a lad his size and takes the phrase "no nonesense defender" too far. He bottles most challenges from players and kicks the ball out of play when there are simple passes available to him. This results in throw ins and corners against us and basically possession gifted back to the opposition needlessly.

We need a player that's strong in the air, tactically decent and can hold his own. Colo and Perch together looked weak, strength wise. Samba was barely challenged at all in the air, which is what lead to their winner.

I think Liam Ridgewell would be a decent, cheap signing. He isn't great, but is 10 times better than Perch and I bet since he is out of contract at the end of the season that he would only cost about £1m.

I think we need a left back aswell - hopefully we can get Cissokho or Pieters in aswell

We don't need anyone special - Ridgewell is a good example of someone who will be fairly reliable but wont cost much.

I'd agree with this. Sign a LB, move Santon to RB, Ridgwell as CB/LB cover.

We don't want someone well known, cos they wouldn't come knowing they'd be back-up, and would have wages too high for squad cover.

Ridgewell would be cheap, is young, won't have high wages, and can cover CB well, as well as providing another option at LB cover. Good player to have on the bench, as hecan basically cover the whole back-4 on his own, allowing more adventurous options on the bench, such as Sammy and Vuckic.

Would be more than happy with us signing Pieters and Ridgewell. They can both play left back and centre back, and Pieters could come in to replace Raylor with Santon at right back. I'm well aware that Pieters is injured till January but that hasn't stopped us in the past.

Incidentally, I have nothing against Raylor who has been brilliant in our opening 9 games, but Pieters is younger and already better, plus he's left footed!

Really, it's Colo who's just not up to scratch, he's the weak link in defence and has been letting us down all season.

<ok> plus players like Raylor, Ridgewell, Obertan, Best etc. as strong squad cover.

I reckon with just those 2 additions we could be challenging for Europe consistently.

If we sign Ridgewell, Pieters, and a striker, that'd be everything covered 'til summer I reckon.

This. Ridgwell is reliable, usually solid and reminds me of a poor mans' Aaron Hughes because of his versatility in defence. <ok>

Yep, and when Smudger leaves in the summer I wouldn't mind another holding midfield to compete/cover Tiote. Also Hoilett would be great
