For me it was a difficult choice for my fav charlton player ,narrowed down to Derek Hales and Colin Walsh but its walshy for me. Loved watching him player his cultured left foot a joy to behold. Non charlton player was easy Johan Cryff, the Dutch master star of the 1974 world cup. For me a genius beyond compare.
That is so tough.... favourite Charlton player, well Hales is up there, as is Peacock and Kinsella, but my winner is Garry Nelson, not the greatest player in the world, but a willing worker, always gave 100% and a thoroughly decent bloke. Non Charlton is tough, Loved Billy Bonds at West Ham, but he classes as Charlton, Liamn Brady was sublime, but mine is Alan Devonshire, great moustache....
John Robinson was probably my favourite player, is 100% Chris Solly of the current crop though and will become my all-time should he stick around. Andriy Shevchenko is my fav non-player was the one time i couldnt wait to see us play Chelsea
Mine has to be scotty Parker. Saw him overcome so many of the heavyweight premiership midfielders, and win us games single handedly. Will always remember Leeds away when he took the game by the scruff of the neck and score 2 in the last 20mins to win tbe game for us 2-1!
No contest for me. I've seen plenty of qualifiers over the last 40 years but top of the pile has to be Super Clive. Top class player and top class pro. Met him once at the Valley - legend. Wembley will forever be etched in my memory. So sad that his career finished far too early and his recent / current hardship. The Club should do a collection for him IMO. Non Charlton - Too many to narrow down.
For me John Hewie as he played in 10 different positions including goalie for 3 games saving a penalty and centreforward at Wolves in 1955 to score a hatrick. Super Clive as well. No CAFC easy Duncan Edwards not doubt about that
Super Clive for me. The hattrick he scored at Wembley was the best ever on that hallowed of turf. Non Charlton........Bobby Moore.......nuff said!!
Agreed, Houndal. Super Clive is the top-man for me. His movement and anticipation were far beyond the level he played at for most of his career. He must have been a nightmare to track for 90 minutes. His finishing was sublime, a master of the craft. Hearing about his woes is heartbreaking; the early retirement led to alcohol problems. I would throw my support behind a benefit match or any event for my all-time hero. Away from Charlton, the greatest player of all is Maradona. A genius. Never saw him play, though, which is a great shame. The best players I have ever seen in the flesh are Gazza, Papin, Giggs and Batistuta.
Rodney Marsh and Stan Bowles - both flawed genuis but great to watch. I always liked watching Le Tissier, never seemed to put in any effort but his record speaks for itself. Made it look all too easy.
All time Charlton favourite: Sir Richard Rufus All time favourite player: Franco Baresi (followed very closely by Zinedine Zidane). The two of them at the back for us would more than do for me...!! Le Tiss is a cracking shout H, he was a tremendous player and one of the last true mavericks of the game. I'm reading his book at the moment (Taking Le Tiss) and i can highly recommend it as a thoroughly enjoyable and revealing read.
Favourite Charlton player- Paddy Powell. Where would Killer and Flash have been without him? I had the good fortune to see Maradona as a 17-year-old when he first came into the Argentina team against Scotland. He slalomed through our defence several times, and scored an incredibly cheeky goal. The crowd booed Argentina on to the pitch, but by the second half were cheering Argentina, mainly because of this amazing young man.
Lovely story, FHB. I am very envious that you saw the God of Football play live. Although I am not envious of your age...!
Yes it was quite remarkable to hear a partisan Scottish crowd chanting Ar-gen-tina! Ar-gen-tina!! It was actually a toss-up between him and Bobby Moore, possibly the most intelligent footballer the planet has ever seen.
Killer. Don't ask where the ball is, it's in the net... Bobby Moore. Cultured. Unhurried. Influential. Supreme role model. Best reader of a game I've ever seen. 56 years, you're probably right but regrettably, we'll never know. I once asked my Dad to describe Duncan Edwards - all he said was "He had everything". Terrible, terrible shame.
serious though that email above was for 56 years!my fav players since i can remember keegan-i wish we had signed him robson -man utd beckham-man utd henry -arsenal brooking -west ham dicks -west ham durrie -chelsea lineka-everton van nisterooy -man utd salano -newcastle cantona-man utd ginola-spurs jones-wimbledon fashanu-wimbledon gazza-spurs o neil -forrest
Has to be Sir Clive - for that hat-trick. i will thank Clive to my grave for that day - the best day of my life - and i've got kids !! Non Charlton player - Shane Warne (you didnt say what sport) - i hated him, because he always beat us - but WHAT a bowler - Tewks , i know you'll agree. ! Best bowler i have ever seen live.
