    Musselburgh 2.55 Gemologist

Course regular who often runs well for each way purposes at this track. On a good mark and Patrick Wadge takes off valuable 10 lb. Lucinda Russell's runners always dangerous to dismiss at Musselburgh.Overall record stands at 0-40 but looks a solid contender for the minor places at least.

Patrick Wadge is 72 rides without a win so not sure quite how valuable his 10lb claim is. Best of luck though.

Some stables put such jocks (apprentice, Corinthian or conditional) on and then can get away with practically anything just by saying the rider was inexperienced or simply no good. A while back one of the Easterby's put up such a rider and then a enquiry was called re the running of the horse. The trainer (or his rep) then batted away their 'devious' run by going on and on, at length, re how bad the rider was.

In many ways it's done as a smoke and mirrors trick. You divert attention away from the fact that the stable has done something untoward (schooling in public, running the horse down the field to get a handicap reduction, etc) by simply highlighting it was all down to the woeful performance of the rider.

While I'm on can I just highlight the fact that yesterday marked 6 months since the Blake barn have had a runner in the NH sphere (Trio D'ecajeul, Uttoxeter, 1 Sept '21). I'm sure many will say 'so bally what' but to me this is hardly good news for the NH game and their case is hardly an isolated one. I'd say it's very, very worrying re the old future...

Over the past decade the yard, for one so small and mainly dealing with moderate horses, have done very, very well in the old NH sphere with a winner at Cheltenham, animals placed at Graded level, having runners at the Festival (performing creditably as well) and having horses run up sequences. Plus, they have always give young jockeys a chance - highlighted, probably brightest, by them using Harry Cobden when he was just a 7 lbs claimer. Now though they have seemingly turned their backs on the NH game to concentrate on the Flat.

I'm sure we can all come up with a multitude of reasons why a yard might adapt such a policy but I see it as nothing but a major, major negative re NH racing.

Ending on a positive - Moving forward I'd expect them to do really well this Flat season and maybe make a real mark in '22.

Yes , but are these glorified work riders , wadge ( no pun ) never gets winners , if I had 0 from 72, think I'd accept I wasnt good enough or find a different stable , agent , job ........

To use one of Nassau Board's favourite points is he (or someone in a similar position) getting rides because of nepotism??? If he's continuing to get rides (and performing badly when he gets them) that may be a factor. Along, as already mentioned, with putting a 'poor' rider up to deflect attention away from some sort of plot / spurious deed (and I'm not highlighting Wadge in isolation by the way).

Work / burgeoning stable riders will, if they want, get rides on stable lesser lights or when there is a severe lack of jockeys available. Plus, almost all stables (even Seven Barrows) will use lesser known riders who they can trust or depend on (i.e. they will ride the horse exactly as ordered). Read into that last sentence whatever you like!!!

Incidentally, I've just had a look at Lucinda Russell's website and her, and I quote, 'assistant trainer' is one Cameron Wadge. So unquestionably Patrick does have family ties to the yard.

In the past 5 years Cameron has done slightly better on the track than Patrick. With 1 win from 36 rides. Cameron's licence is though amateur compared to Patrick's 'conditional'.

As Stick pointed out the jockey is 72 rides without a win. You pointed out that the horse is without a win in 40 runs. However looking at course form it has 11 places from 21 runs there. Skybet going 3/1 for it to place in first 4. That could be the bet. Best of luck with it. Hopefully 1-41 after today

Wow, that is a lot of chat about a jockey who isn't a jockey!!

Based on SPs the lad should have ridden 3 winners (expected winners). He is a young lad (20)

My favourite bit about Wadge is -

An enquiry was held into the running and riding of RIVABODIVA (IRE), ridden by Patrick Wadge and trained by Lucinda Russell, which was held up towards the rear of the field and appeared to be tenderly handled from leaving the back straight, before pulling up before the last flight. The rider and the representative of Lucinda Russell were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination revealed a minor wound to its left hind and was very slightly lame left hind. The rider stated that his instructions were to hold the mare up in rear to regain the mare’s confidence by passing horses and to not resort to using his whip as the mare had become sour. He added that he had asked the mare for an effort by squeezing to encourage RIVABODIVA (IRE) along but half way down the back straight as the pace picked up he was unable to maintain his position and became detached. Wadge further added that coming up the hill he became further detached and therefore felt prudent to pull up the mare. The representative of the trainer was satisfied that the ride accorded with the instructions given. Their explanations were noted.

Lads im staying in Bristol and getting the train down to Cheltenham on the tuesday and Wednesday. Is there a cheaper flexi train ticket available or just buy a return each day at the station?

I'm not an expert on UK train tickets but a quick google told me an off-peak day return will set you back 11 quid:

I would think buying in advance online will be cheaper

Depends on if you want to tie yourself down to set times or not. Oddy's comments are useful on this too.
