The people of Russia and Ukraine have few differences to sort out. Ukraine is something like 1/3 ethnic Russian.

Yeah that's the point I was trying to make. Neither people want this war. I was speaking to a Russian i know a little yesterday who has always been very anti Putin. she wishes they could do something to to the war but every protest they have had against Putin has just lead to arrests and nothing else. I think we need to show that this is different to the past and change might actually happen if they take action if we want Putin to be forced out.
Ever heard of Poland Ian? It shares a 332 mile border with Ukraine and has been a member of the EU since 2004. If you have information that Putin’s forces are currently occupying Poland please share it with us. I only mentioned the black ops idea because I would be surprised if they weren’t already there.
Well look. I’m no expert, neither are you (I presume) and Ian definitely isn’t. I just double checked with someone who definitely is, and asked “do you think there are special forces people already there”, to which he answered, “for sure. 100%”. I’m inclined to believe him over someone reading a book on Roman history. Whether you do or not is up to you.
Even if Ukraine was surrounded, its a massive country with a massive border. Im not sure Russia has the manpower to fight the Ukrainian army and secure the borders at the same time. Ukraine is a massive expanse of fields and forests with some towns and dense cities scattered in between. I would guess very easy for small groups to move around and hide in.

Just for reference, the majority of what I splurge on here about this situation is a rehash of chats with my friend. He's got everything correct so far (which is no surprise as he's worked in military intelligence for the past 20 years, and prior to that was in the special forces). The only thing he's got wrong, is that he didn't think Putin would actually invade Ukraine, because it would be tactically such a bad idea, for the reasons that have been borne out since this started. So I believe what he says, over and above any armchair experts. That's my position!

Well said, LTL - I think this crisis has shown the EU to be stronger than anyone, especially Putin, who’s spent years trying to weaken it, thought. As for meeting in Belarus, really? Do you think if Ukraine’s democratically elected president went there to negotiate he would ever return? What he’s done is far more sensible - send diplomats to meet on the border to discuss. I think Putin massively underestimated the resolve of the Ukrainian people and he thought that by buying the U.K government and facilitating Brexit to weaken the EU would mean no sanctions. Hopefully wiser heads will now quietly remove him and broker some level of peace
