I believe Ukraine could not join NATO as its borders were disputed? Therefore agreeing firm borders with the two Russian influenced states would allow them to make a real bid to join. I suspect you are right and it is more complex than that though.
This popped up on my Facebook page today. I had read about this before, and forgotten about it, but I guess because of the war now taking place it has resurfaced. Holodomor, a Soviet enforced famine in the Ukraine, in 1932/33, resulting in millions of deaths. https://www.ranker.com/list/facts-a...iF_YOUXBh2sUUq3dq-huzRhqmTqACvEzGaX5AaIzYGjdM
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/home-secretary-announces-visa-concessions-for-ukrainians " Dependants of British Nationals resident in Ukraine who need a UK visa can apply through the new, temporary location in Lviv or through a Visa Application Centre in nearby countries, including Poland, Moldova, Romania and Hungary. However, all other visa services in Ukraine have been suspended." However I do believe they can still apply for a visa in Poland if they can escape.
Bellingcat is a very good independent media operation. Sending tanks into a city the size of Kyiv is extraordinarily risky: tanks suck in urban centres, particularly when the population has spent the last week preparing for tanks in their streets. If there are 500 tanks heading to Kyiv, that's an enormous gamble.
Interesting that Ukraine is setting up a portal for foreign volunteers to join in the fight against the Russian forces. That potentially gives Western nations a plausible deniability option to secretly send in a few special forces, if they really want to help topple Putin.
Is it any wonder Britain had become a global laughing stock when **** like this is out there? Equating RAF Brize Norton with the front line is beyond parody.
Just heard the Putin has put his nuclear forces on alert …. I wonder what the Doomsday Clock is at now. 11.59 and 30 seconds?
That's absolutely outrageous from Putin. It's the actions of a man who has thrown his toys out of the pram after things have not gone his way. It's an empty threat but what a petulant ****.
I’d like to think any such order would result in a swift refusal from those in charge of said weapons.
Sadly, I believe those with their fingers right on the button will have been told that their homeland is under direct threat by the forces of the West and this is the only deterrent. There is so much propaganda being sent to the people of Russia (most of whom don’t want this war any more than the rest of us) that they don’t really know what’s going on. Our only hope is that there is still enough people there who are receiving social media from global sources that the true version of events is getting through
An empty threat ? You cannot know that . I hope you are correct , but I would not put anything past this man .
