Watching the Superbowl and getting nicely numb on a Barefoot Merlot so am now able to 'rationally' add to my earlier posts. Middle daughter, aged 22, has a reading week at Uni (Cardiff) where she is doing her Masters so decides to come home and is waiting at bus stop outside the Student Union to catch National Express coach to Victoria at about 3pm ... there are a few people at the bus stop but she is the only young female on her own ... guy comes up to her, grey jogging bottoms, black puffer jacket, in his forties, he has a bouquet of flowers ... speaks to her, says he has bought them (looks like an expensive bouquet) for his girlfriend as a surprise and says his girl is in the street just around the corner - would my daughter take them and give them to her so that it's a complete surprise - coach isn't due for another 10 mins and my girl, being a bit of a romantic and it is Valentine's time so she agrees to and they set off ... when they get to the next corner he says "not this one - a bit further" ... this goes on corner by corner and she starts to get a bit worried ... when they come to the next one there is a group of girls just in front and my girl tells him that she is in danger of missing her bus so can he ask someone in this group - he gets agitated and tries to get her to carry on - she says no, gives the flowers back and goes back to the bus stop ... he follows, loiters near by, and when she gets on the bus he gets into a red van parked opposite which drives off ... called her mum from the coach in a right state ... we then call South Wales police.... suspect there is plenty of CCTV round there and that they can trace him ... might all be innocent, who knows (I ****ing don't think so) but his demeanour had her scared ****less by the time she got back to the security of the bus queue ... Thoughts of what might have happened if she hadn't got the wobbles don't bear thinking about ... Needless to say, now that she is home safe, I can caln down ... and have ... but I have been raging ... contrary to popular belief, I'm quite a chilled personality in the real world ... except when it comes to my family ... Thanks for all the supportive comments etc. ... appreciated
Too horrific to contemplate the alternatives but I would advise having a word with your daughter about strangers etc.
Sounds like a possible nasty situation. Glad she is safe and fingers crossed they can maybe track who it was/stop it happening to someone else.
Glad everything is okay but have a word with her mate that's pretty naive. Couldn't believe she agreed to that scenario from the start.
In fairness to her ... was partly down to me banging on since she was little about strangers and the methods of serial killers like Bundy that stopped her going further... but just goes to show ... she thought it was the next corner which was literally close to the bus stop ... but as I said to her, that could still have been enough for the worst to happen. She realises the gravity of it all and whilst I don't want her scared of her own shadow she will certainly now be on her guard.
In hindsight, it looks easy to say it's naive. Lone woman, going off with a Stranger. It's an obvious red flag right ? But I can see why somebody would go along with it, seems innocent enough and quite a nice thing to do for somebody. Something you think will take 2 mins in broad daylight with other people around ... But yeah, probs not a bad thing for her to be a bit more aware of these types of scenarios.
Thanks for sharing this Fosse. I'll be having a word with my 14 year old after school as you can't repeat the warnings too often in my opinion.
