This reminds me when I went to see Manchester United v Leicester in 1967 when United won the First Division Championship. At the end of the match the fans went on the pitch for the team to be presented with the trophy. After the presentation the cameras were switched off and the police came out of the tunnel - it was on the half way line then - and laid into the fans with batons until the pitch was cleared.

Having g had first hand experience with police in Spain (where I got an on the spot "fine" for not wearing a helmet on a motorbike, which no **** ever did back then), and Germany, I accept things could be worse.

As for Old Bill, I wouldn't want to see a return to the way they used to treat football fans and people on picket lines, but I think things have swung too far the other way now. I've seen the abuse the Met take from some of the street rats round here, and have occasionally thought "you gonna take that from him officer, or are you going to collar the little twat?"

Being civil to everyone until they step out of line is probably the ideal tbh.

I think the abuse you talk of is partly due to the attitude of the current batch of officers, which is largely down to the recruitment policy and training. It's left them systemically pompous, which doesn't help when it comes to solving crime, as they need the help and support of the public. I also think that a clip round the ear from an 'appropriate' plod that has the personality and people skills to command respect as they can be measured with their response is a cost effective deterrent.

 

They are if their job involves crossing the border.

 

Same as truckers just about everywhere then. You're not driving off a ferry in Bolougne or Zeebrugge without being vaccinated, I'd imagine.
