    Stokoe did. Brown was before my time, but my dad told me about it years ago when I was a kid. Brown came back and replaced Ian McColl, but wasn't a popular choice. A lot of problems had started under McColl (including rumours of discrimination against Catholic players, while Baxter and a few others could get away with murder), but Brown never managed to get them sorted out. My dad always said that he thought Brown held us back in his second stint by being too dogmatic and doing things his way, even though in the past he'd been considered an innovator. Stokoe took the shackles off and got the team to play

    Well lads, I think we can go to kip and sleep a little easier tonight.

    Tomorrow is about lifting the team though and singing a few Defoe songs. Then if a couple of Keano songs make the sing list then so be it!

    Let’s hope we have a special guest sitting in the stands with KLD and hawayyyyyyyyy the lads !

    Before my time too but I love a bit of football history. Brown was very much a disciplinarian as I understand it. And, like you say, quite inflexible. He's considered (by Jonathan Wilson at least) to have been a significant influence on Brian Clough as a manager. Brian Clough, of course, had a big influence on our own manager-in-waiting. Its interesting how its possible to trace a line between these people. In the same way its possible trace a line from Jimmy Hogan through Vic Buckingham, Bobby Robson, Rinus Michels, Johan Cruyff, to Pep Guardiola.
