Given how proficient this new regime has been with transfers, I can’t imagine we not pretty well advanced with an alternative or two. We’ll just have to bite the bullet on Sunday and decide what’s realistically going to go through. Longer it goes on, the more I think Defoe might actually be the back-up to someone who more fits our usual profile.
I do think Johnson deserves a lot of credit for how Stewart is doing. For all his faults he certainly knows how to get his strikers performing and scoring. See Wyke too.
Maybe they're hoping to get a good striker in and everyone goes "get in" and then the Defoe let down doesnt seem so bad after all.
I know we are being really 'quiet' in terms of being linked with players but who do people think are the strikers we would be in for? (Totally ignoring all the Defoe stuff) We are full with loans so it would have to be a permanent deal whoever it is.
We’ve got some good players who also have high potential in the team and squad and we feel really close to finally getting out of this league, can we do it? I hope so as if we don’t we are going to lose some talent I know part of modern football is developing players and moving them on, reckon I could handle established premier league clubs taking the players but championship clubs taking our best players would be harder to take.
Evening folks. I have been on an interview panel all day, so phone in a secure area. Didn't get to look at anything then had family stuff. Everyone a kip know like. I have heard nothing different at all from what I posted previously. Had to communication at all. I'll try and find out a bit more tomorrow.
Not up on names but I’m imagining similar to broadhead roberts and Clarke ie young, development stalled a little, plenty of potential have to remember as well that initially they are likely to be back up to Stewart unless we change our formation/approach …..gonna be a hard sell
This is exactly right. Anybody coming in knows they’re back up. I think the best bets are likely a player with something to prove from Scotland or Ireland. One who knows he might get the odd chance. A player on the way up not the way down to get back up. A “data” type signing rather than one any of us could guess. I did think it might be that Georgie Kelly guy - but I think he’s just signed for Rotherham.
I think we still have a fair few moves to sort out. I'll guess at 2 out permanent and 3 more coming in. O'Brien one of the outs, I think he is on a decent wedge for L1, I like the lad but I know he splits opinion. Benji will go on loan somewhere probably as well
Let's be honest. The squad we already have "on paper" is more than good enough to get out of this league. LJ has in my opinion got the best and deepest squad in the league by far as it stands even now. There are no excuses if we don't go up automatically. Teams raise their game against us as we know but we should be good enough.
Would I be right in saying that the biggest problem is the fact that the recruitment team had their plans and main targets, however the Defoe situation came up and this deal is an extra short term boost that the club really don't want to turn down and are trying to reshuffle to bring him in aswell as sticking with their other targets that are obviously the long term aim of the club. However they realise that the chance of having Defoe for the rest of the season will give us an incredible advantage in our promotion
The team we have now has a nucleus of players that could quite easily step up to the Championship instead of a team full of leauge one players only good enough for leauge one. Conspiracy or not, the past few years the majority of players took their foot off the gas when we had a sniff of promotion because they knew they'd be out of a job. Even the play off final was half arsed. I've always said if you want to get out of one leauge, you buy/loan/free agent from the one above.
I'm fully expecting O'Brien to go, I think he very nearly did last window but there was some admin problem, he's not played much since. Good honest player and I like him but he's lower league one at best.
