If and it's a big if Oxford are offering more... But they might feel they need to offer more to stand a chance I suppose. Like everyone else I haven't got a clue but my comment was slightly tongue in cheek
He is a multi multi millionaire, if he really wants to come back the wage demands and things Upthere is saying really shows more about Defoe than our club. I would love JD back but he is a 39 year old and losing time the more this rumbles on. As long as we have a striker to help Stewart, that's all that matters come Tuesday next week.
I think we probably have a value on what we think we are prepared to pay Defoe and won't budge from that. Defoe will want the best deal he can get and surely playing in front of 35k singing his name is worth more than a couple of extra thousand at this stage of his career. To be honest I'm bored of it now. If I were the club I'd give him until Monday to make a decision then remove the contract offer
I'd hate to think we are offering JD any more than 5 grand a week. He's coming to sit on the bench for 4 month unless something happens to Stewart and his wage should reflect that.
If Defoe signs, fine. It'll be a nice bit of sentimentality and will make us all feel like he really does love the club but, essentially, its just a side show. If signing him means breaking the wage structure that the new owner and his team have put in place, or moving players on who could do a job for us over the longer term, then its got to be a no.
I wouldn't give him that long, 5pm deadline today, then we have a chance of finding someone else, if we haven't already got one lined up. If he's arguing about a few quid at his point in his career then he's not the player 'who loves this club', that's just media bollocks
I agree mate. Come Monday night,we need a striker. If our recruitment people get a striker who fits our profile....i.e. young, quick, talented, full of promise, to provide adequate back up for LND....then we'll be happy. If our recruitment people get a striker who doesn't fit our profile......i.e. old, quick, talented, promise fulfilled, to provide adequate back up for LND....and who can also inspire the younger players around him, whilst beginning a coaching career with a club whose trajectory is upward...then we'll also be happy.
AOB is on over £7.5k p/w just to sit on the bench, I think JD would offer more in 4 months than AOB has done since he got here.
Time is running short now and we need a striker. Needs sorting literally now or we get moving on others options.
I reckon we are working on others as well mate. He wont have been on our list at the start of the month, he seems more of a left field option that we are giving some thought to. It might suit them now to have it being a story that is rumbling on whilst in the background they are doing other things.
I wonder if the speculation surrounding a return for JD is, in fact, making the chances of us finding a decent RS back-up increasingly difficult. Even without the JD speculation - I think that the "RS back-up" slot is difficult enough to tempt anyone with a half-decent track record to come to us - essentially they`ll know that they`re going to be warming the bench unless RS gets injured, maybe a 20/25 minute cameo if we need someone to turn the game... On the basis that JD is not as young as he once was (I struggle to call anyone who`s 39 "old") and the expectation (on here at least) is that he`d be used from the bench - where does that leave any RS replacement - as a second sub to be called on only if we`re desperate...it just doesn`t feel like that attractive an option to pull someone away from a settled position in a decent team - would we risk a back-up from someone who doesn`t tick that box? If you look at some of the names we`ve been linked with who do you think realistically would come to sit on the bench for us - the only one I thought might would be Clarke-Harris from Posh but even he started mid-week for them and scored... I`m just glad I`m not having to try and sort it
I get the feeling the the Defoe signing would be an additional to what has already been planned. If we get him then great, if not we crack on. Be amazed if there isn't a 3rd striker lined up
Did that Ladapo actually move anywhere? I know he handed in a transfer request so thought he must have something lined up but haven't seen anything to say he has signed for anybody.
Defoe doesn’t seem to be the type who is after a payday and will go to the highest bidder. I get things such as playing time or a coaching role may come into it, but I’d be amazed if it’s a money thing
Good points!.. ......If we don't get Defoe....we will all want to know why. My final word on him is this - You get Defoe....this lifts the club....this lifts the supporters....this lifts the squad.. And then this happens - Defoe can't wait to play. But when he does get his 2nd debut....he lifts the team = the team lifts the supporters = the supporters lifts the team !!!
A million and one things need to happen before it can be done, let’s not forget that. Will happen when/if it happens
Right! my two-penneth on JD. These last transfer windows have been impressive and I reckon our team headed by Speakman are getting all the calls right so if they really think JD can do a good job for the rest of the season (and maybe coach a bit) then I’m fine with them going for him. If he ends up here I believe he will do a good job. If he doesn’t come then maybe Speakman and Co can see reasons not to pursue his signing and they think he will not be what many expect. Either way, I have full faith in our recruitment team.
I dont want to know why we havent signed certain players. Its none of my business, I just go along to support.
