70 points was good enough to finish in 6th place in the 2019-20 season. Plus we have a game in hand over Huddersfield.
The only time they were as low as 19th was after 4 games, and by the time they'd played 27 games they were 8th. It's a good example of a team improving, but I'd put them more in the Forest of this season basket. We've left it far too late which is completely fine. Not everything has to be instant. If we went up this season we would be demolished next season without spending 100m+.
But not a game in hand over all those other teams above us like Forest and then some of those teams have games in hand over us, like Boro and Stoke. It's a fun thought but it's not worth considering seriously or we'll just end up annoyed come the end of the season for no real reason.
From 19th after 27 games on 29 points? Or perhaps were they 10-12th at around this stage, with 10 or less points to gain on only 4-5 teams above them? EDIT: Which Watford team? Can't find one that started a season particularly slowly in their last two promotions.
In all honesty i would have to delve into it to properly check but i know some have made it coming from way off the pace , and it is still possible we can if we win a few more we are up in the area we need to be for a run to the finish line not impossible and certainly not easy but possible all the same.
Certainly having knocked off two of our 'hardest' games remaining is a big help, but my concern is raising hopes unrealistically just leaves more room for anger/disappointment when we don't achieve it. We should be happy to stay in the division this season, form and build on a solid core of the squad, make some key additions this summer, and launch for next season. Going up too early can just destroy the confidence/experience of the squad. At this stage in their development, it's perfectly fine for players like KLP and Greaves to have another season of Championship football under their belt next year before having a stab at the PL. We bring in these two strikers and if they work out well, it means we can go into the summer focussed on building depth and experience in other areas of the squad, shedding some deadweight, and being in a really good position to make a tilt on the PL. It would then mean not having to completely overhaul the squad in a single summer upon promotion. There's such a thing as going up 'too soon'.
That maybe so to you but you are still debating it all the same, do you mean it is ludicrous that some may think it's possible or have had a dabble on maybe it happening, it is never to soon to be promoted the club gets enough for going up and i think they would have at least an idea about what they would do if we did go up, But as Acun said it's a plan and they will push next season to go up but no harm in a little fun in the meantime.
Wrong. I'm only debating insofar I'm telling you you're a bit nuts for thinking it's a possibility, and I've explained why. We'd have to be winning 15 of 19 games at a minimum, and counting on other sides slipping up. Plenty of sides have been promoted too soon and struggled as a result after a relegation. You either end up spending silly money and changing your entire squad in order to try to stay up, or spend nothing, get flogged every week, come back down, and then struggle to re-adjust to the Championship. As I said, the harm comes by raising expectations needlessly only to then end up being disappointed/critical of where we finish up. If we finish top half that will be an outstanding achievement and should be celebrated, not grumbled as a "well we didn't make the top 6".
There are a lot of sides who successfully seem to yoyo. Burnley established themselves in the prem for many years using that model and I notice Norwich are showing signs of survival. It's a strategy which can be successful. Don't knock it. As for top 6. It's about as likely to happen as it was we'd get relegated this time 2 years ago.
It's only harmful if you let it be and have that sort of personality. I don't but if either or both bets come up i'll be happy as hell. If they don't it won't matter about losing the stake money, if it did I wouldn't bet.
I think sydney is on about people getting their hopes up about reaching the play offs not the betting.
Not knocking the strategy of yo-yoing at all, and plenty of good sides have gone down then back up. My point is more about sides who go up too early and then when they go down get stuck down again. It's a lot 'easier' to lose all your games than to win them though, but I take your point.
There's a lot of examples of teams coming from mid-table and making a late charge and then winning promotion, I've never said there isn't. I've asked for examples of teams coming from as far back as we are, as late as it now is. None of the teams mentioned did that.
