Probably the hottest I've ever been at a football game in this country. Remember it being a scorcher of a day
Mmm. I was there for the 1-6 and just this morning remembered that my previous visit there was for the 2-6! Hopefully things can only get better, although a big ask tomorrow, particularly having played Sunday - Wednesday with a small squad (practically all played 90 mins on Wed) and a long trip down there. Would be very happy with a point.
You want to hear her potty mouth! She’s friends with relatives and some of the messages I’ve seen from her have more use of the word ‘****’ than this board!
Made the trip from Bournemouth many times in the Mid Sixites in the opposite direction to watch City at Boothferry Park in the heyday of Waggy and Chillo. Roads were a little different to what they are now of course. With the M1 only partially opened and the M62 non existent. Of course there were other things to entertain me in the Hull area in additon to the drinks in the Granby before the game, but, I wonder if my time might have been better occupied wandering the beautiful countryside in Dorset and environs as opposed to driving back and forth to Hull in mad dashes of 6 or 7 hours. (wistful note to myself only)
Well I used to drive non stop and maybe it was more like 7 or 8 but as time flies by and we are having fun the memory dims. i suspect it was faster then than it is now based upon my limited experience of driving in the nineties and early 2000 era on the M1 from Gatwick to Hull with the motorway backed up from one end to the other-a dismal experience. Remember getting on the M1 on my first drive from Hull to Bournemouth in early 65 on or around Nottingham which at the time was the furthest point the M1 went. I had been living in Malaysia for the previous 2.5 years so when I left the UK in 63 motorways hardly existed, so I was blown away when I got on the M1 and saw three lanes in each direction with hardly a car on it.
Listen to this interview with Tom Eaves. You can’t help but want him to do well, he comes across really well.
No speed limit on the motorway until December 1965. An AC Cobra being tested at 186mph, with admiring police taking photos of the car and posingbwith it, and Jaguar making an advert for an E type doing 152 mph caused a fuss. Using supposed high rates of crashes as a reason Barbara Castle introduced a 70 mph limit. It was supposed to be temporary. Like income tax, which was supposedly a temporary measure when introduced in 1798, it became permanent and is still with us.
Went to the 4-0 there...Great day...Elliott may have got a couple. Seemed to recall Damien Delaney curling one in. Haven't checked.
