Yep, I agree, it was rarely if ever a straight forward 4 3 3 . You might remember it was me and you that were pointing that out way back? That's why I put it as '4 3 3' (inverted commas) and talked about variations of. It was the insistence of 4 at the back, 1 isolated striker. 2 players mostly stuck to the touchlines, massive gaps in the centre, etc. All from variations of the so called 4 3 3 (which was rarely actually 4 3 3). But for simplicity, referred to a '4 3 3'.
I’m going to buck the trend and say I’m still happy for him to go. He’s definitely improved but I still have major concerns about his ability to impact a game after it has started. Someone made a point about new players coming in, these could be very different to the style of players he’s been working with up to now. I’m willing to take the risk this season in the hope it pays off. I might end up being wrong but Stoke disallusioned me too much to change my mind based on last night.
If Acun or any of his management team had seen the Stoke game, then he'd be heading for the exit pronto, equally one good game last night doesn't change the dynamic necessarily. Terrys record at this level remains bl**dy awful, and feel that if any of Acuns/Tans prospective new players are reticent to play under McCann then he's gone. Personally feel he hasn't been dealt the best of hands, but he accepted the gig knowing the pitfalls. Last night, the only difference between Sunday was a new owner sitting in the stands, and a slightly larger attendance to influence what happened on the pitch. To say it's obvious the players are playing for Terry based on last night is naive, in which case why didn't they play for him on Sunday when they were absolutely awful? The question is if Terry goes who replaces him, and it's not knowing that which I dare say has got some on here saying stick with him 'for now'. Also players won't welcome change, nobody does, but it's part of life. One things for sure, I'm sure the decision, whatever it is, was made by Acun and Tan before last night. I'm sure the decision revolves around whether Terry can get us back in The Prem as this clearly appears to be Acuns 'dream', the answer to that is no in my view. Do we stick with Terry or get shut, for me it remains get shut providing of course Acun does indeed have someone lined up who he sees as being fundamental to what he and Tan may be seeking to do in this transfer window.
I am absolutely on the fence with this, part of me thinks that last nights result and performance was at least partly due to his preferred players being unavailable to him, if Wilks, Coyle etc were available I’m pretty sure they’d have been a shoo in, would Williams even be getting a game?, and the shape of the team would have been completely different. Sunday against Stoke, taking Smallwood out and replacing him with Thudd as a starter made no sense to me. As much as I love Tom he just doesn’t have the speed or mobility to be in the heart of the engine room, hence Stoke constantly streamed through our central midfield. Compare that with the midfield performance of last night! Alternatively I’m nervous, as others have said, about bringing a new manager who doesn’t know the Championship. It’s not just the old 2nd division anymore, although that was hard enough, it’s one of the hardest leagues in the world, in this league you don’t just need to be highly skilled you also need to have an enormous heart. Needless to say if a completely ‘new to this country’ coach thinks it’ll be easy to get out of it by bringing in a few luxury players we’re highly likely to exit it south rather than north. At the end of the day I’ll trust in Acun to get it right, if not in the short term then in the long. I’m just sooooooooo pleased to have the stench of the Allam’s finally gone. Allam’s finally out! edit - I forgot to mention that on a couple of occasions during his post match pressers last night, with both Sky and RH, he inadvertently gave the game away anyway with his own words if you listen closely. As HT2 has been saying, he knows he’s going and the terms are probably already agreed, although as with anything that could change.
I don't think you're bucking any trend. There are probably still more thinking McCann leaving is the best option(you just need to look at the above vote). Some have swayed back toward keeping him(the McCann 'in' vote was sat at 11 for long enough,I should know,I was one of them and remain so).Ultimately I think the decision would've been made some time ago and as others have pointed out and fair comment,Sunday's performance would've seen most of us showing him the door? On the occasions we have hit a bit of form this season and won games with good performances, you can see the justification in keeping things as are but Acun may have seen us at other low points and thought...'get rid'.Hopefully things move swiftly and we all know what's what,McCann first and foremost deserves to know.
Have a feeling Acun made his mind up about McCann some time ago. Whichever way it goes make it quick and clean please.
I wouldn't say it's them playing for Acun, but the atmosphere plays a huge part. Playing in front of that excited crowd last night with all the hype, was far easier than playing in front of a miserable crowd against Stoke. Everton had a similar feel. Hopefully we can keep that sort of mood in the ground as much as possible because it really does make a difference. I even wonder whether the decisions would've gone our way if there wasn't that atmosphere. It's tough for a ref to play party pooper, whereas the ref for the Stoke game gave everything against us.
As for McCann, you can analyse every aspect of it but ultimately we just haven't seen what he can do with a fair crack at it, no hands tied and a reasonable level of resources at his disposal. If it was me, I'd tell him to crack on with a bit of money to spend and take it from there. Maybe he'll still be ****, but at least then we'd know. Seems daft to me to get rid now just when he's finally got a fighting chance.
Let me clarify, is McCann the manager to take us forward, nope, but as it stands with a little investment would it be wise to change manager to someone who doesn't know this league and the demands of it ? I'm really not sure tbh, sometimes it best to stick with what you know, given our still.perilous position. McCann's record at this level is dire, agreed, but unless they're looking at someone who has the nowse to keep us going forward not sure it's worth the risk just yet.
I suspect from what we've seen in the media, they new owners and management have been doing their homework all season. The Director of Football appears to have been hands on since before Christmas presumably assessing current players with an eye of who will go and who will arrive. Unlike some takeovers there have been I get the clear impression that Ilicali and his team are real professionals.
Different people, different personalities Syd. Because Sluts didn't work out it doesn't mean no one else will.
Of course, just pointing out that just because a manager has been studying and preparing doesn't mean they'll be a success. Unproven managers are exactly that - unproven.
