The Queen is dead. So sad to hear of the passing of the fabulous Norma Waterson at 82. Best known for her prolific folk catalogue with various combinations of her extended family, she was also celebrated for her forays into pop and jazz.

Here she is with husband Martin Carthy:

and from her 1996 solo album which should have won the Mercury prize:

    RIP Norma <rose>

Here’s a bit of the original Watersons lineup with Mike on lead vocals, to lift your spirits:

This one is a touching tribute to his friend, Scott Hutchinson of Frightened Rabbit who committed suicide in 2018...

This is the new single from Indie Pop band, The Beths who hail from Auckland NZ. They have some real infectious melodies and guitar breaks and all four members of the group sing harmonies. I love'em!...

This comment intrigued me. Last week I read an article on a jazz website which concerned a number of artists who had left major record labels and were now getting their music out via Bandwagon. There seems to be a problem with the availability of plastic for either Cds or LPs and there is a lot of disatisfaction with Spotify for precisely the reason you have mentioned. The musicians were saying that Bandwagon was a briliant platform for issuing new material. It fascinates me that new ideas like streaming mean that so much material can be released at a lower cost.

I do not download music but I can see how things like live gigs have an appeal and the idea of less studio-produced material being released means that records more accurately reflect the improvisatory nature of jazz. It is fascinating as I think these kinds of platforms mean that streaming really offers a truer reflection of what the music is about.
