Im not saying they won’t go on to have good careers but I don’t think the club did anything wrong regarding them. Madueke decided to go abroad because of a quicker pathway to first team football. Didn’t he reject Man Utd, Chelsea and Spurs because he knew Dutch footy would be easier to make an immediate impact in. Edwards too chose to go abroad for the same reasons I believe. I don’t think the club can be promising youngsters X amount of games a season just to keep them happy and by the sounds of it, that’s the only way they would have been happy to stay and sign long term deals.
Dutch and Portuguese football both have a history of good youth development coupled with their football being at a better standard than most Considering both were stuck in U23 limbo instead of getting senior football, both moves make a lot of sense - unlike Reo Griffiths, as while French football does have a good record of developing youth, signing for Lyon meant he was just as likely to be in the same place but in a different language, as has happened
When I first started scouting (at another London club), the best I was allowed to offer a kid’s parents was a new bike for the kid and any siblings.
The club did wrong by not doing enough to persuade them to stay and convince them to have their potentially good careers here. We’ll never or rarely have more Skipp’s or Kane’s or even Mason’s/ Townsend’s if we just discard our young players’ wants and needs and make them feel like there isn’t a route into the first team, especially ones that are clearly are a cut above their teammates which Markanday is and Edwards/ Madueke etc were. We’re missing out on both potential key/ first team players and/ or £ms… at a time where we seem to consistently scream “we’re poor” as we haggle over £20m fees for weeks. Club really needs to do so much better.
This was why I kept saying that we needed a DoF. I'm still not convinced that we've got one. Paratici seems to have taken over a lot of the transfer business from Levy. That's not the same thing, in my opinion.
Neither yet, but he's about to be sold according to various people, all reporting the same thing. His contract is up in the summer and he's not going to sign a new one.
Much as it pains me to say - It was under Sherwood that Kane and particularly Bentaleb got their chance initially, Poch relegated Kane back to the Europa league at first, but it was off the bench I think with that massive fluke deflected free kick (still the only 1 he has scored in the prem) that he made his mark for Poch and the rest as they say is history.
Bentaleb signed a deal with Angers until 2025 last week: He was without a club and started training with them in September to get his fitness up.
i know harvey elliot was signed from fulham. Likewise brewster and solanke they nabbed from us so wasn't sure if we should/shouldn't include them. In any case, why isn't that an option for spurs? They effectively ran their contract down on us and could sign for who they wanted. I think they went to liverpool as they thought they had more chance of first team football which i guess is why all the young superstars go to dortmund. Spurs could have been the club but recently have decided against that (when poch first arrived, kane, dier, alli etc which is why i think you trips was happy to sign for you)
Oh yeah Sherwood definitely gave them their breakthroughs, Kane actually debuted under Redknapp IIRC back in the UEFA Cup/ early Europa days but Bentaleb definitely broke through under Tim, although both were still essentially on the fringes of the squad and they needed Poch to truly install them as first XI players over the likes of Ade/ Soldado and Paulinho etc. Sherwood didn’t do much right but he did put faith in a couple of young players and we owe him for that, Poch then just elevated his work tenfold. Kind of how Poch gave Skipp his debut but it’s been under Nuno/ Conte that he’s truly excelling, albeit we can probably also thank Jose for sanctioning his Norwich loan, he really needed that season away to develop, done wonders for him.
