Peter Bogdanovich, who has died aged 82, was among the few examples of a film director whose career rocketed spectacularly at its beginning before it soon plunged to earth. His third feature (after two neophyte efforts), The Last Picture Show (1971), was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and won two. The film that followed, What’s Up, Doc? (1972), was a massive box-office hit, which grossed a healthy $28m for Warner Bros. On a winning streak, Bogdanovich achieved a hat-trick with Paper Moon (1973), which was not only a commercial and critical success, but won a best supporting actress Oscar for Tatum O’Neal who, at 10, was the youngest ever recipient of the award. It seemed that Bogdanovich could do no wrong. But then came Daisy Miller (1974), which received mainly bad reviews, and was followed by further flops and personal upheavals.

    RIP Sidney Poitier
He played Virgil Tibbs in that movie, alongside Tom Courtney's mate Rod Steiger. Steiger won an Oscar, as did the movie. I always thought Poitier was better than Steiger on screen. Great movie though.

    Famous line from that:

Rod S: And what do they call you up there boy?
Sid P: They call me Mr Tibbs

40 years now and throughout that time What's Up Doc ? has never stopped being my favourite film. I know what's coming next at any given point, I can recite bits of the script and I've even been to some of the places in San Francisco where it was filmed. If anyone hasn't seen it, they really should - it's hilarious and plain daft at the same time but brilliant.

Grange Hill actor Nicholas Donnelly, who played teacher Mr MacKenzie in the much-loved children's show, has died at the age of 83.

The actor, who played the role for around eight years, died in his sleep at the weekend and had not been ill, his family have said.

I've just read an obituary of Andrew Jennings who as an investigative journalist was behind the successful investigation and subsequent prosecutions of key FIFA and IOC members. He died on 8th Jan. I don't think he was on Sepp Blatter's Christmas list.

Interesting to see that he studied social admin at Hull Uni in the 60s and investigated the 58 trawler deaths after three sinkings within weeks in 68 - from which he got a job on the Burnley Evening Star. From there he worked for the BBC, ITV, the Sunday Times etc.

He semi retired to Cumbria after a stroke in 2015 and died of an aneurysm aged 78.
