Here's the match report from the 9-1 drubbing in 1908!

I also like the fact that if we talk about beating Barcelona or drawing with Inter at the San Siro they say "<doh> stop living in the past!" <laugh>.

Steve Bruce when asked if Sunderland can emulate the 1-9 under his tenure:

Is 1-9 the codeword for having a stroke?

    That result was in 1908.

How many of you lot knew that a goalkeeper had permission to handle the ball anywhere in his own half up until 1912? There were about 5 fundamental rules which weren't in place then, the funniest being that you were allowed to shove the keeper over the line if he was stood with the ball in his hands and it would count as a goal!

Anything pre-ww2 means nothing to most people.

<laugh>!! I didn't know that, hilarious. I knew most teams had 9 strikers, 1 defender and 1 goalkeeper though.

Your lot would tell us to stop living in the past, like most of you do if a Newcastle fan brings up something as historic as yesterday.

The thing is though, both of us are just as guilty.

Hang on, I don't know why this didn't occur to me earlier.

Anyway, because the 1-9 was so long ago, it doesn't really count?

You say you won the league that year, so does that not count either, or the other two titles in 1905 and 1909?

It counts as much as those league titles. In that none of us were even remotely alive to see them happen and for the most part our grandfathers weren't alive to see them either. The whole point is that it's hilarious to see mackems use something from 100 years ago as some sort of proof of superiority when most of what they've known for their lives is derby day misery.

In terms of club history, I'd say league titles count and the time period is irrelevant but one single result from a season 100 years ago doesn't.

So just because no one was around, they should just be forgotten. What was that George Santayana quote?

So records don't count? Or is it only the case when Newcastle are on the right side of such records?
