Good Morning. It's Wednesday 5th January, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Can Mateo Joseph save U23's from the drop

Leeds have completed the signing of teenage striking sensation Mateo Joseph Fernandez from Espanyol. Victor Orta's persistence finally paid off as he signed a three and a half year deal last night. He will add much needed firepower up front for the U23's as they look to secure their top flight status in Premier League Two.

Mark Jackson's side have slipped to 13th (out of 14) after a promising start to their campaign. It is hoped the 18yo will be an adequate replacement for Gelhardt whose first team career is starting to blossom. Joseph
netted 44 goals in 56 games at developmental level. Last season, he bagged 14 goals in 21 matches for Espanyol’s Under-19s. Have Leeds overestimated their young talent? If they are not strong enough for Premier League two, what hope do most of them have of breaking into the first team?

    MP demands justice for Revie

Labour MP Chris Evans is calling on the FA to issue an official apology to Don Revie’s family for their vindictive treatment of the late Leeds legend during the latter parts of his illustrious Managerial career. Having failed to qualify for the 1978 World Cup, Revie quit as England boss, to take a similar role in Dubai as head coach of the United Arab Emirates.

Incensed by Revie's actions, the FA charged him with 'bringing the game into disrepute', and issued a ten-year ban from managing in English football, which Revie managed to get overturned in the High Court. Evans, the Shadow Minister For Defence Procurement, has written to FA chairman Peter McCormick urging him to issue a posthumous pardon. In his letter, the MP for the Islwyn constituency wrote:

"Despite simply doing what so many other people do every day, resign from a job to take employment elsewhere, the FA under the leadership of (Professor) Sir Harold Thompson charged Mr Revie with bringing the game into disrepute." "There is evidence that the FA did everything (they could) to discredit him. Such as writing to the then 92 League clubs to remind them of the ban.

"They also attempted to obstruct Liverpool, the 1977 European Cup Winners, from (playing) a friendly in the Emirates simply because Mr Revie was working there." "Mr Revie passed away after a brave fight against motor-neurone disease (but) not before being subjected to appalling, baseless accusations of dishonesty. It is my sincere hope the FA will look to issue an apology."

Cornet was asking for trouble - Robbo

Former Leeds and England shot stopper Paul Robinson has accused Burnley's Maxwel Cornet of 'asking for trouble' for his second half antics at the weekend. The Ivory Coast International was on target for the Clarets with a spectacular free kick, and rubbed salt into the wounds by celebrating right in front of the Leeds fans. A plastic bottle was thrown from the crowd in the direction of the opposition players. It hit Matt Lowton on the head, causing a bruise. Fortunately, the defender didn't make a meal out of it. According to Robbo:-

“There’s no excuse for throwing a bottle but you know where your fans are in the ground. “You wouldn’t necessarily go in front of home fans and taunt them, which we’ve seen twice recently. Rodri did it for Man City in front of Arsenal fans; that was uncalled-for, and I don’t think Maxwel Cornet’s celebration helped the situation.

“There’s no excuse whatsoever for throwing anything onto a football pitch, you shouldn’t do it and whoever did it should be banned and dealt with accordingly. “But I think the players should know where they should and where they shouldn’t celebrate. “When you’re playing in such a hostile atmosphere, you’re asking for trouble. “It shouldn’t happen but you know where your own fans are so go and celebrate with them.”

    Morning all :emoticon-0148-yes:

Everyone knows my views on our U23s and the top top players we currently have. The 4 we brought in in 2020, Gelhardt, Greenwood, Drameh and Summerville are now all England U21s and helped us win the league and promoted to Prem2 Div1. We then got the cheque book out again and finished up with probably the most exiting team in the league after Amari Miller, Sean McGurk and Lewis Bate joined. We were flying high and Joffy smashed Liverpool in a 0-4 win to Leeds and we were a point behind leaders Man City.

Then Bielsa’s small squad decision impacted the whole academy and not only did we see Drameh, Greenwood, Gelhardt, Summerville and Cresswell (skipper) move into the first team to replace injured players, but we went a dozen games without a win due to the injuries in the first team. The U18s were also affected as young kids moved to the 23s to stand in for Joffy and Co, and even the U16s affected as 15yo Gray moved to the 23s.

i believe Bielsa has been unlucky as I have never seen a club with over half its squad out injured before, but I believe a massive lesson has been learnt because the 18man rule has sent the whole club backwards. I believe if Bielsa stays we will see at least 20 in the squad going forward. Joffy deserves his promotion and therefore young Matteo is the obvious choice to replace him. On of the best kids in Spain, wanted by Man City, Liverpool and Barcelona. Lets wish the kid good luck and hope he can be as good as Joffy

Morning Ell, some interesting talking points on todays forum.
U23’s…… well the first priority is our 1st team, we do seem to go around in circles, how many yrs has it taken for Joffy to only get on the fringes of first team football, if I was Joffy Bielsa would have had a knock on his door and ask him straight out, where do I fit because Roberts can’t lace my boots.

Don Revie was treat like a dog, his barristers came back and wiped the deck with the FA, maybe that why they are vindictive towards us?

Paul Robinson needs to go do one, he’s hanging around the fringes of our club looking for some attachment.
Does anyone remember him critisizing us just after we failed to get promoted from the CL, he said that we looked tired over trained etc. well one of the lads saw him the start of the next season in the West Stand car park and confronted him, he said he was stuttering and stammering like an aspin leaf.

Looking at the players we have out on loan, I believe there are only Costa, Bogusz, Davies and maybe Alfie that could help us out by being recalled? Even if only to shore up the 23s

    2. Kiko ....................... Elche
    3. Edmondson .......... Port Vale
    4. McCalmont ...........Morecambe

Newcastle have agreed a fee of around £12 million with Atletico Madrid for Kieran Trippier.

    Good business?

Greenwood is an ex Sunderland player so will want some ofbthis. Will we see Matteo Joseph Fernandez get some minutes, will we see Bamfordand Joffy?

Premier League Cup action for the Whites.

Mark Jackson will take his Under-23s side to York City’s LNER Community Stadium on Wednesday evening, as they take on Sunderland Under-23s in the Premier League Cup (19:00)

This Group E fixture will be the fourth match of the competition for Leeds, and the fifth game for visitors, Sunderland. The Whites up to now have won once and lost twice, taking three points last time out on home turf against Mansfield Town.

The Black Cats come into the game with just the one win from their four games, which was at the Stadium of Light back in October when they ran out 2-1 winners over Jackson’s side. Mike Dodds and Michael Proctor’s team are sat third in the standings at the moment, a point ahead of United having played a game more.

Leeds haven’t been in action since a goalless Premier League 2 draw with Everton in before Christmas, and will now be looking to get three points on Wednesday evening, which could take them up to second in the group.

The cup competition as a whole is split into eight groups of four teams, where each team within the group will play one another home and away. From there, the top two teams will progress into the knockout stages of the competition which are all one-off knockout ties, with extra-time and penalties if needed.

The current holders of the Premier League Cup are Everton, who were crowned champions in 2018/19. For the last two years, the the competition has either been curtailed or hasn’t taken place, due to the pandemic.

Supporters are able to watch the match live through LUTV, or alternatively, ticket information for fans wishing to attend the match is available at the bottom of the page.

Depends what they want him for - if he helps them stay up, a bargain. Else I expect he's on wage terms depending whether he plays PL or Championship football.

Leeds U23s dont play a league match until Monday down at WHU, so going to be interesting to see who we play in that game. I expect a big squad going down there on Saturday and to get some training in with the 23s taking advantage and giving minutes to first teamers coming back and unused 23s from Sundays first team game

Hey Mike good to hear from you mate. Bogusz started the season on fire but after scoring 3 worldies and getting 8 assists he went through a crap period, but was back on form over Xmas and he created another assist in a win. brighton have just spent big money on an 18yo Pole, our young Pole is now 20 and maybe he will have to ply his trade away from Leeds

Yes. They need ready made players immediately and Trippier has played at the very top level for the last few years. He improves their starting line up and makes them stronger from the minute he signs. It's the perfect signing for Newcastle.

At 12 million for Trippier I wouldn’t say that Newcastle are exactly splashing the cash
    For now at least

The money Newcastle are apparently going to throw at it, £12m for Trippier isn't too much of a gamble, plus he's better than they've got.
