I'd be very cautious about using South Africa as a comparison, it has a significantly younger population than the UK. I agree we need to live with it at some point, but during only the first full winter post vaccine its a big risk.

Filched from my friends on Iron Bru, Even though they think it was Britain’s finest hour they just couldn’t have hacked it because: – Everyone was issued with a gas mask and had to carry it at all times when out of doors. There were frequent drills in town centres when wardens with rattles like the old football ones, would give the warning and everyone would have to stop and put on their mask. Every household had to reinforce their windows with tape. There was a strict blackout at night enforced by ARP wardens. Households with gardens were provided with an Anderson shelter which they would have had to rip up part of their lawn to install. If you were caught out on the street during an air raid wardens would direct you to the nearest communal shelter. No ifs and buts! Everyone was issued with a National Identity Card (I’ve still got my Mother’s) which you had to carry at all times. There was rationing on most foodstuffs as well as some items of clothing. Children of school age living in cities were evacuated to smaller market towns or country villages. Sharing a home with complete strangers. Men between the ages of 18 and 40 HAD to join the armed forces unless they were in a protected occupation. Our anti-vax, anti-mask, conspiracy theory loving, YouTube adoring chums would have had none of it! They’d have refused to carry a gas mask, not bothered taping up their windows and kept the lights on during the blackout. They’d have said “I’m not digging up my lawn for a crappy shelter”. Would have protested against Identity Cards and rationing. Parents of evacuated children would have accused the host families of *****philia, and if eBay had been around in 1939 some blokes would be sending off for a lanyard with a card attached saying they were excused military service because of asthma or some other made up condition. And as for having their inoculations before going to North Africa or Burma …! My sisters got it now, and sister in law both started with a sore throat which my mum has just started with . Looks like could be cheese spread sandwiches for Xmas lunch for me
I was in hospital today for an op I've been waiting nine months for as a "priority" case. I mentioned to the nurse that I've been expecting a call to say it was going to be postponed because of Covid cases, she said they aren't at that stage yet up here but are expecting this to be the case in around two weeks. It's not just those with Covid who are affected, it impacts on many other people who are sensible enough to get all the vaccines available.
My husband was evacuated under school age from Hull in 1942 to Morley near Leeds. Looked after by an old couple who found difficulty in coping with his energetic behavior. Their solution was to shut him away in a dark cupboard under the stairs. His stay with them was less than 6 months.
Seen on the news this morning, they opened with the line deaths and hospitalizations increase 12 fold in a week, now it's 14 dead and 129 in hospital. Is there any chance the media could put up a good news story?
