India have flexed their muscles. The BCCI would be scared to death that players couldn't get to the IPL.

It will be a long legal process to decide where the costs of this will lie.

I'm pretty sure India could have found 11 players to have played today.

No Tests between end of June and mid-August next year. India due to tour anyway. Might as well fit the 5th Test in then.

Seems a bit much to give India the series when they could have lost this match.
Suited India completely to call it off, especially considering that the IPL starts soon too.

I feel sorry for Jimmy Anderson. It would have probably been his last test match on his home ground as there is no test scheduled there for next season.

This apparently isn't official yet and the series stands at 1-2 to India till it is.
Could be weeks before it's settled due to insurance claims for cancellation etc.

New Zealand men abandon Pakistan tour after 'government security alert'

New Zealand's Henry Nicholls and Tom Latham during a practice session in Rawalpindi on Thursday
New Zealand's men team have abandoned their tour of Pakistan following a New Zealand government "security alert".

The Black Caps were due to play Pakistan in the first of three one-day internationals in Rawalpindi on Friday before moving to Lahore for a five-match Twenty20 series.

England's men's and women's teams are due to play in Rawalpindi next month and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said it will decide "in the next 24-48 hours" whether the matches will go ahead.

The men and women are scheduled to play double-header T20 internationals on 13 and 14 October before the women's side play three ODIs on 17, 19 and 21 October.

New Zealand's decision to abandon their tour came after "an escalation in the New Zealand government threat levels for Pakistan".

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has said it will not comment on the details of the security threat with plans being put in place for the team to return home.

"I understand this will be a blow for the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board), who have been wonderful hosts, but player safety is paramount and we believe this is the only responsible option," said NZC chief executive David White.

In December 2019, Pakistan played a Test at home for the first time since the Sri Lanka team bus was attacked in 2009.

With international teams opting not to tour because of security fears, Pakistan have played the majority of their 'home' matches since 2009 in the United Arab Emirates, often in front of sparse crowds.

Pakistan assured New Zealand Cricket of 'fool-proof security arrangements'
In a statement, the PCB said that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan - a former Pakistan cricket captain - had spoken to his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern and told her that "no security threat of any kind exists for the visiting team".

"Earlier today, New Zealand Cricket informed us they had been alerted to some security alert and have unilaterally decided to postpone the series," the statement said.

"Pakistan Cricket Board and the Pakistan government made fool-proof security arrangements for all visiting teams. We have assured New Zealand Cricket of the same.

"The Pakistan Prime Minister spoke personally to the Prime Minister of New Zealand and informed her that we have one of the best intelligence systems in the world and that no security threat of any kind exists for the visiting team.

"The security officials with the New Zealand team have been satisfied with security arrangements made by the Pakistan government throughout their stay here.

"PCB is willing to continue the scheduled matches. However, cricket lovers in Pakistan and around the world will be disappointed by this last-minute withdrawal."

Ardern said her government "totally support the decision that's been made", adding: "Player safety has to be paramount."

Pakistan captain Babar Azam tweeted: "Extremely disappointed on the abrupt postponement of the series, which could have brought the smiles back for millions of Pakistan cricket fans.

"I've full trust in the capabilities and credibility of our security agencies."

In a series of posts on social media, former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar said: "New Zealand just killed Pakistan cricket". He also highlighted that the country had safely hosted tours by South Africa, Bangladesh, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.

Ex-West Indies cricketer Darren Sammy, who has played and coached in the Pakistan Super League for the past six years, also spoke of his disappointment with New Zealand's decision, saying he had "always felt safe".

PCB chairman Rameez Raja said: "Feel so sorry for the fans and our players. Walking out of the tour by taking a unilateral approach on a security threat is very frustrating. Especially when it's not shared. NZ will hear us at ICC (International Cricket Council)."

An ECB statement said: "We're aware of New Zealand's decision to pull out of the Pakistan tour due to a security alert.

"We are liaising with our security team who are on the ground in Pakistan to fully understand the situation. The ECB board will then decide in the next 24-48 hours whether our planned tour should proceed."

Last week, the final Test between England and India at Old Trafford was called off at the last minute after the tourists reported a number of Covid-19 cases within their camp, while England have postponed their own planned tour of Bangladesh to 2023.

    Analysis
by BBC Urdu's Syed Abid Muhammed Hussain

When I was driving to the Rawalpindi stadium today, I kept thinking about how 18 years ago New Zealand had to end their fateful tour in 2002 because of a bomb blast across from their hotel in Karachi.

As I arrived at the stadium, I could see a throng of passionate fans with their faces painted, holding Pakistani flags and queuing up to get inspected by the security officials. It was then I received a call from my colleague informing me the match had been postponed.

The reason, I was told, was that a "couple of players had contracted Covid".

Immediately, social media was fired up, timelines scrolled, messages checked, and for at least first 15-odd minutes, it was difficult to ascertain how many players had caught Covid, which teams they belonged to and how many matches would be affected.

I could see lots of pickets set up and manned by officials of Punjab police, as well as large police vehicles and some officers wearing riot gear, but there was no hint of any urgency or panic.

It almost appeared that at that point in time, with the toss less than 30 minutes away, neither the fans nor police knew about the fate of the game, and were just milling about.

And then, the news arrived and what followed was a torrent of news, conspiracies and emotional responses on social media.

For the next few days this cricket-mad nation will obsess about nothing but how this decision is an "insult" and how the Kiwis could have not acted so hastily.

On the last afternoon of the season Warwickshire need the last two Somerset wickets for less than 132 runs to w8n the County Championship.

Should do it, but somehow I don’t think I’ll be kept awake tonight by fireworks and car horns honking in celebration in leafy Warks.

    Ajaz Patel's Perfect 10

Ajaz Patel dismissed Mohammed Siraj to complete the Super 10
Ajaz Patel wrote himself into the history books on Saturday (December 4) on Day 2 of the second Test against India at the ****hede Stadium when he became only the third man in the history of Test cricket to take all 10 wickets in an innings. Ajaz finished with figures of 47.5-12-119-10,the third best figures behind Jim Laker (10 for 53) and Anil Kumble (10 for 74).

Here's a quick recap of each of his 10 wickets from our Ball-by-Ball commentary...

    1. Shubman Gill c: Ross Taylor b: Ajaz Patel 44 (71)

27.3 Ajaz Patel to Shubman Gill, out Caught by Ross Taylor!! Gone very next ball! Blundell will be a relieved man. 80.8kph, tossed up, fuller and around the fourth-fifth stump channel, Shubman Gill is half-forward and pushes at it with hard hands. The ball spins away, catches the outside edge and goes into the bucket hands of Taylor at first slip. Ajaz Patel has been New Zealand's best bowler today and he provides the much-needed breakthrough!

    2. Cheteshwar Pujara b: Ajaz Patel 0 (5)

29.2 Ajaz Patel to Pujara, out Bowled!! Five-ball duck for Pujara! Another failure for India's No. 3. Ajaz Patel is pumped up as he's picked two wickets in two overs. Punches the air in delight. Lovely delivery this from the left-armer. Nicely looped up, Pujara comes down the track to flick across the line and his back leg is off ground. The ball dips and spins away to hit the off-stump. Pujara was bamboozled there.

Ajaz Patel reacts after winning an LBW shout against Virat Kohli

    3. Virat Kohli lbw: Ajaz Patel 0 (4)

29.6 Ajaz Patel to Kohli, out Lbw!! Kohli has been adjudged lbw and the Indian skipper challenges it. Was there an inside edge? There's a spike on UltraEdge when the ball is close to the bat. Was it bat first or pad first? That's the key here. The TV umpire is having a look at various angles. A fullish ball and Kohli pressed forward to push. The ball might have touched bat and pad at the same time. It's touch and go. "Ball and bat and pad appears to be together. I don't have any conclusive evidence to overturn that," says the third ump. He asks umpire Anil Chaudhary to stick with the original call and then has a look at the ball-tracking. Three reds on HawkEye! The on-field call stays. Kohli has a word with Nitin Menon before trudging back to the dressing room. A double-wicket maiden for Ajaz Patel! Ducks for Pujara and Kohli. Brilliant stuff from the left-arm spinner.

    4. Shreyas Iyer c:Tom Blundell b: Ajaz Patel 18 (41)

47.4Ajaz Patel to Shreyas Iyer, out Caught by Blundell!! Ajaz has his fourth wicket, he's been simply outstanding today - clever changes in line and length, nice variations in pace and it was simply too much for Shreyas - flighted on the leg-stump line and this one straightened a tad, extra bounce also coming into play as an unsure Shreyas pressed half-forward - was playing for the turn, ended up playing outside the line, gets a thick inside edge that lobbed off the pad and it's a simple catch for Blundell, moving forward and past the batter. No doubt about it and Shreyas doesn't even bother to ponder, off he goes.

    5. Wriddhiman Saha lbw: Ajaz Patel 27 (62)

71.4Ajaz Patel to W Saha, out Lbw!! Five wickets for Ajaz, he has deserved this haul - pushed trough with the arm, kept coming back with the angle, Saha made room for the cut and is beaten as the ball skidded through, struck low enough and adjacent to off, would have been crashing into the top of off. Has a chat with his partner, but both knew he was caught right in front, decides against a review and walks off. India have lost five and all five have been taken by Ajaz - his 3rd 5-wicket haul in Tests.

    6. Ravichandran Ashwin b: Ajaz Patel 0(1)

71.5Ajaz Patel to Ashwin, out Bowled!! Ravichandran Ashwin looks shell-shocked, takes him a fair bit of time and some prodding from his partner to walk back. The third umpire is just checking if the ball indeed clipped the off-stump, it did and Ashwin can continue walking to the pavilion. This is some delightful bowling from Ajaz as he bags his sixth - lovely delivery, slowed down the pace, drifted in and just turned enough to beat Ashwin's forward press, flicked the back-thigh and then went on to hit the off-stump. The zing bails light up and Ajaz finds himself on a hat-trick. Ajaz on a roll and so are New Zealand today. So confused was Ashwin that he actually signalled for a caught behind review, didn't realise that he was bowled.

    7. Mayank Agarwal c:Tom Blundell b: Ajaz Patel 150 (311)

99.5 Ajaz Patel to Mayank, out Caught by Blundell!! Seventh wicket for Ajaz Patel! A lovely ball to end a superb innings. Drifts in, lands on a length around middle and spins sharply. Mayank stays back in his crease and gets squared up. Tamely sticks his bat out in an attempt to play at it and nicks off to the keeper. He knew he got an edge and walked back. Receives a well-deserved standing ovation.

    8. Axar Patel lbw: Ajaz Patel 52 (128)

107.5 Ajaz Patel to Axar, out Lbw!! 82.6kph, in-turner from a length, Axar shoulders arms and allows the ball to hit his pad. The lbw appeal has been struck down by umpire Anil Chaudhary and New Zealand send it upstairs. It's a fair delivery. No shot offered, so the impact doesn't matter. Over to ball-tracking - hitting off. The visitors took their time before challenging it, turns out to be an excellent review. Eighth wicket for Ajaz Patel.

    9. Jayant Yadav c:Rachin Ravindra b: Ajaz Patel 12 (31)

109.2 Ajaz Patel to Jayant Yadav, out Caught by Ravindra!! Nine out of nine for Ajaz Patel! tossed up ball at 85.8kph, Jayant Yadav decides to take on long-off. Dances down the track for a loft and the bat turns at the point of impact. Ends up slicing the loft and it's straight down Ravindra's throat at long-off.

    10. Mohammed Siraj c: Rachin Ravindra b: Ajaz Patel 4(3)

109.5Ajaz Patel to Siraj, out Caught by Ravindra!! Ten out of ten for Ajaz Patel! He joins Jim Laker and Anil Kumble. Take a bow! The Mumbai-born spinner has created history in ****hede. His team-mates rush in to hug him. Gets a standing ovation from the ****hede crowd too. This is how he got there - a flighted ball, drifted in and spun away, Siraj shaped up a mighty slog after getting down and the ball ballooned up towards the mid-on region off the top-edge. Ravindra settles under the skier to gobble it up.

From the sublime to the ridiculous ! New Zealand all out for 62 in their first innings and with India currently 100-0 in their 2nd innings, heading for an almighty tonking. Kane Williamson is set for a fair time out of the game with an elbow injury.

Virat Kohli steps down as Indian Test Captain now.
Stats show he has been pretty successful though:

Don't like the guy but there's no doubting his inspirational qualities as well as being one of the greatest batsmen ever. He's taken things on from Dhoni and made India into one of the strongest sides in the world especially in tests lately. There's been alot of changing teams around from most countries over the last 2 seasons and it hasn't helped India or certainly England . I think his captaining legacy will be the change of mindset he brought to their side, they are a much more in your face side now and their fielding has improved out of sight. He's a hero in India like Tendulkar and Dhoni and whether you like him or loathe him he is certainly one hell of a cricketer !
