https://rokerreport.sbnation.com/20...ng-defensively-for-lee-johnson-and-sunderland Great but very worrying read.
It’s been an issue for as long as we’ve been in this division and it never seems to improve. Some of the ****e that score against us is embarrassing frankly.
It's an excellent article. Some of us on here have been calling for an out and out defensive coach for some time.
A very good read and gives us plenty of food for thought. The system and our willingness to bomb forward leave massive holes which good teams have noted and exploited. Surely, it's time to match up to teams playing 3-5-2, which will give us more cover. Even if we do this though, players need to be drilled in when to press and who is responsible for pressing, particularly in wide areas. If this piece shows us anything, it's that our CB's are pulled out of position too often.
Good point? RR picks our defence to pieces and underlines the inexperience of the younguns and lack of cover from some of our pros. Maybe we didn't struggle as much v Cambridge as Bailey isn't as mobile so didn't get dragged out of position (apologies haven't watched the game yet).
As I said on another thread, about wingers, wing backs etc. Is picked up much better in this piece. The analysis by RR is very good highlighting why we are not stopping crosses etc. It is worrying in that, most fans seem to understand whats wrong and have some good ideas as to how to improve... but LJ?
Good article and highlights a massive flaw in out tactics The defense is constantly left exposed. Its not all on the defenders our midfield is the crux of the problem. Said loads of time when we have the ball we are OK but once we lose it we are a shambles. 9 times out of 10 once we have lost the ball it ends in a cross or a shot from the opposition. We have no shape some seem to press some seem to drop off we don't work as a team and no one seems to be able to tackle. We need an experienced defensive coach to work with LJ
This is just as important as strengthening the team, as far as I'm concerned. With one or two exceptions, i think we have the players to do the job, they just need to be schooled in how to do it properly.
Absolutely. It’s really obvious that we have no real plan or shape when we lose the ball. LJ has been in charge for a year and our style of play is much better but his defensive frailties have not been addressed if he’s to stay on then he needs support in that area
If we are looking at a modern progressive coaching structure we should be definitely looking at it Klopp at Liverpool has specialist coaches for all sorts of things. Identify our weaknesses and fix them. Doesn’t matter how
