this. Don't see the point in playing him out of position. If we were to make a change, at least play Jonas on the right, as he has a lot of previous experience there.

For me Obertan is an impact player, perfect for the last 20 mins against a tiring defence.

Obertan needs to be told to be more aggressive. Pardew said on the radio that he had told him to keep possession and the lad took it way too far by getting it and square passing all the time, not something a right-sided midfielder/winger should be doing. There's been a ton of times Obertan's been one on one with the full back and in almost all cases he'd rape the defender for pace if he even just leathered it past him and ran like hell. I don't mind if he loses it a couple of times attacking the full back, it happens to the best, but it just looks like he's not trying to beat anyone and I know he's capable of better than that.

Like a previous poster has said I think I'm just impatient with him because we could be doing even better than we are if we had someone better in his position, which is perfectly achievable for us. I disagree with the Ben Arfa on the right suggestions, Pardew says he has decided that he'll never play Ben Arfa there., only in the support striker/playmaker no.10 role. Marveaux is the only other real option where that position's concerned. Him and Jonas could cause some havoc switching flanks IMO.

I would argue that there are plenty of other explanations.

Marvaux is a left sided midfielder not on the right where obertan plays unless jonas switches wings allowing marv to play on the left he won't be playing ahead of obertan. Marvaux is quality but pardew won't change a winning formula as if he can help it. Obertan just needs confidence when taking ob defenders, he looks terrified of trying anything in games. Marvaux will never just take obas place because they play diffrent positions! Sick of hearing about it now, the key is always going to be where jonas is playing at the moment I'd have jonas over marv anyway

To be fair, Pardew answered a question on Obertan during the radio phone in...Said everyone wants him to run at defenders, including Obertan himself. But at the same time, we want to be able to keep possession and not be entirely 1 dimensional so thats why they occasionally have him pulling the ball back and playing it safe...Against Tottenham Pardeaux admitted he did it too often, but said its just about finding the right balance...

Stick with him today - bring in Marveaux against Blackburn, decide after that!

I'm reserving judgement until I see Obertan v2.0 where he's given the freedom to run at defenders instead of keeping possession.

Also we're forgetting the support Jonas provides Ryan Taylor, the left back. I say same starting XI today, play HBA, Shola, Marv, Santon, Harper etc midweek and remind them that they have a massive chance to prove themselves

After all the abuse at Ameobi on the forum before Spurs, I see Obertan scoring the winner :D

Dont think Marveaux should be played entirely out of position just for the sake of dropping a really promising player because he's had a slow start. The talent is clearly there (Blackburn and Fulham games), he just needs to be coached into using it properly.

And I just watched the Obertan interview, he didn't just saying "If we get an early goal, it'll be easy" ... He said if we can get 1 or 2 early goals it'll make things easier because they won't be expecting it and their mentality will change, then we'll have to maintain the pressure that we've had in other games and we can win...Hardly a bad attitude, its just common sense!

Marveaux played left, right and centre for Rennes. If you youtube him I'm sure a few of his goals will show him coming from a variety of positions. I'd stick with Obertan and wouldn't change a winning team unless its for fitness reasons. I won't lie though I think he struggles in a midfield role, lacks passing and a football brain to play there. I think he'll be a forward only in time.

He looks, to me, like he'll be best in a central or left position. He has a very good cross on him by the look of it (Forest game, playing left wing) and a lovely passing range (Villa game, playing central). Have you watched him for Rennes?

Just listening to Marveaux's interview on NUFCtv, he is asked what his favoured position is and says left wing, or sometimes in an advanced central role. I dont doubt he CAN play on the right but maybe he doesnt want to.

I agree but if he keeps being so inconsistent he's a bit of a liability down the right i guess wigan could be the perfect game to let him unleash against a weak defence tbh i really hope he gets a goal or an assist to give himself confidence and prove his doubters (me included) wrong because i think the lad has a stack load of talent ...he's just abit of a healess chicken with the ball at times ...but i suppose so was jonas until he sorted out his end product

Want to see Marveaux play on the right. I'm yet to see a winger who can't play both sides.
