    Great idea from OTIB https://www.otib.co.uk/index.php?/topic/214692-ranking-city-managers/

I have copied it and changed it slightly but you list it to suit your own thinking, how would you grade the top and worst manager Bristol City FC have appointed including and since Alan Dicks, not just for honours gained but overall development of our club.

Remember, respect all individuals for their choices, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

    My choices ~
    Best ~
    1) Alan Dicks
    2) Terry Cooper
    3) Steve Cotts/ GJ
    4) Joe Jordan
    5) John Ward

    Worst ~
    1) Tony Pulis
    2) Coppell
    3) Benny Lennartsson
    4) SOD
    5) LJ

I have left Nige out of it, you can include him if you wish.

Wiz, I think you have it almost spot on.

Agree with your top 5, I think it's pretty straightforward.

I'd have LJ about 3rd worst when you remember no manager in our history as ever been backed like LJ.
And look at the squad he left us with.

Pretty much agree with you Wiz, oh except your assumption that everyone on here is entitled to their own opinion, some clearly aren’t, <laugh><laugh><laugh>

Yep, GJ took us from League 1 to on the verge of Premiership and LJ maintained 2nd tier the longest since AD....all about the level for me

Cooper saved our club, it’s a toss up between TC & AD for our best manager. He took a club that had no money, a bunch of kids and not only stopped the rot, but gave us back a club and a team with pure hard graft. Despite all his success as a player he considered what he did with us his greatest achievement . Could you imaging Gerard or Lampard, for instance, doing that now. Legend is branded about, but that man to me is a Legend.

AD by the smallest of margins got my vote because ultimately took us to the top division, but TC came close.

This is really difficult because for me there is only one stand-out winner and that is Alan Dicks.
The others have had successes too but limited to a specific level and within different budgets.
I’m also restricted to choosing from living memory!!!
    I suppose mine would be:
    Best:
    1.Alan Dicks - legend

the rest (in no particular order):

    2. Gary Johnson - successive promotions and 90 minutes from realising the dream
    3. Terry Cooper - for keeping us in the league all those years ago
    4. Lee Johnson - for giving us the longest period in the second tier since the great AD - despite having his best and most influential players sold from under him time and again.
    5. Pemberton - for instantly stopping the disastrous plummet under Cotts before LJ took over.

Worst: (crikey there are so many to choose from!!)
    1. Benny
    2. Tinnion
    3. Coppell
    4. SOD
    5. McInnes

Interesting (but hardly surprising) that LJ is guaranteed to feature in everyone’s list - some people’s best and other people’s worst, but he is going to be there - he has certainly left his mark!!!!

LJ was sacked because we STAYED in the championship too long.
Don’t worry - it looks like we are about to get out of it.
    #progress. My arse.

This was why the ranking is so tough. Each manager had a different challenge. It’s a bit like comparing apples to oranges.
As I said in my ranking post; the only standout winner is Dicks.
There are others who achieved in their own way too but I had to keep it down to 5.
It was far harder to pick only 5 from the ‘worst’ bunch though!!!

In reality a pretty impossible task no where near a level playing field to play on....

Most emphasis will come from those with a dislike for certain managers, and odd reply will be against that or commented against it

Different periods of time where kit and teams were of a different stature

wages transfers and income was different

plus a few other odd events/items not seen in todays game .....

AD of course achieved the ultimate goal so rightly in most peoples assessment is number 1, but like almost all of our managers he ultimately failed and so was sacked.

His failure conversely very nearly cost us our very existence and in my opinion is why we not ever made it back to the top flight, successive chairman have been frightened next time we may get not be so lucky.

Only 2 managers since the mid-70s have kept City in the second tier for more than 4 consecutive seasons, and they are both called Johnson! And yet, you have 1 as 1 of the best, and 1 as 1 of the worst.... Just shows what a bigot you are RP, and makes you no better then than the nepotist you claim SL is for hiring LJ. Shame on you.

The cloud of red mist will never go away. Let’s hope he acknowledges the rate of progress made since his departure <laugh>
